    Barack Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He was born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Kenyan father and American mother. Obama received a law degree from Harvard Law School and was a civil rights lawyer and professor before serving in the Illinois State Senate and as a U.S. Senator from Illinois. He was elected president in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, during which time he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
