REFLECTION

Abstract
The following discussion is a reflection concerning a text reading. The reflection regard
the case of Jess Overton a victim of domestic violence and her familys struggle to
become independent and lead self-determined lives.

REFLECTION

This case demonstrates the struggle of victims domestic violence (and their
familys) and the need for them to acquire for self-determination and agency. The case
describes the various difficulties Jess encounters in attempt to successfully free herself
and children from longtime abuse. Jess and her kids are not only stigmatized and
traumatized. They face the inequity of social and political constructs of power. They
deal with eligibility requirements to receive needed services to gain a since of
independence and create sustainability for her children. Jess is and her children have
lived through a systemic insidious violence. Only to find self-determination is a constant
struggle within a system that offers little to no assistance toward lifting them up and out
of their situation. The system violates her and her kids further by not providing real
solutions and safety nets to prevent them from slipping through the cracks and creating
new issues for them.
