Economic consequences of Lisbon were

flagged - Morris
Speaking this morning, Sinn Féin North Tipperary Cllr. Seamus Morris said
that Fine Gael’s recent crocodile tears over the EU’s announcement over the
upping of the level of scrutiny of our national budgets were hypocritical given
their stance during the Lisbon campaign.

He said:

Either Fine Gael and Labour have amnesia or they had no understanding of
what they were voting on. During the Lisbon campaign I repeatedly pointed
out that the ‘yes for jobs’, ‘yes for recovery’, ‘vote yes for jobs’ slogans were
far too simplistic and in fact false promises. When we in Sinn Féin said that
the Lisbon Treaty would allow greater EU interference in our economic affairs,
that Ireland’s tax system would be up for re-assessment and that the
harmonisation of tax systems across the EU would be an eventuality, we
were dismissed as being paranoid or introspective. Unfortunately, what we
feared and warned against appears to be the reality. We need to protect our
economic sovereignty at EU level and control our national fiscal policies.
