Our Hometown Hero Jackson Giants braved

another early morning road trip on Sunday to face the
Evanston Outlaws in their home territory. The skies
were overcast and seemed threatening although the
wind was a touch warmer than that in Riverton.
The Giants wasted no time in establishing
themselves on base as Marc Rossolo started things
off with a slicing single past the Outlaw 2nd baseman.
Christian Doyle watched 4 straight balls and was
awarded 1st while Andy Renz worked a full count to
his benefit following Doyle to 1st on a walk. Carlos
Toledo hit a slow roller to the shortstop Lawyer, who
tried to roll a double play but the “Torpedo” beat feet
to 1st ahead of the throw scoring Rossolo. Ethan
Moulder whiffed at 3, bringing up another left
hander, Patrick Renz who smacked a shot past 2nd for
a 2 RBI single to give the Giants a 3 run immediate Andy Renz was sensational from the mound dominating
the Outlaws with 13 K's
edge. Andy Renz took the hill for the Boys from
Paradise and kept the Evanston boys scoreless
through the first inning striking out 2.
Coach Sean Triplett goes over some offensive strategy with the Giants

The second inning was scoreless for both squads, but the top of the 3rd was the beginning
of the end for the Outlaws as Ethan Moulder started things off by getting hit by a pitch from the
big Outlaw pitcher Gary Richardson. Moulder then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and then
after picking up a hesitation in Richardson’s windup, stole 3rd. Patrick Renz delivered again
with another hard shot through 2nd scoring Moulder, but unfortunately P Renz was stopped at 2nd
on a ground ball to short by Sean Sonderman who reached base with a fielder’s choice. Wyatt
Shaul then hit a slow rolling ball to Cade Limb at 3rd who couldn’t turn it quick enough to get the
quicker Sonderman at 2nd. Tristan Shockley in his first at bat for the Giants, picked up his first
big boy RBI when the shortstop, Lawyer bobbled a routine grounder allowing Shockley to reach
first and Moulder to score. With the bases loaded, the snide was on as Coach Triplett had Sean
Sonderman, booking for home on the windup and Marc Rossolo place a textbook bunt down 3rd
picking up an RBI the dramatic way before the Giants were retired. A Renz continued to
control everything from the mound as he forced Lawyer into a easy ground out to Rossolo at 2nd
who then easily threw to Christian Doyle at 1st. Andy Renz then sat down the Outlaw catcher,
Coate and Cade Limb both looking.
Top of 4 and time to score! Ethan Moulder started things
off with a walk, Patrick Renz tried to get something going but
flied out to right field, Sean Sonderman then walked bringing to
the plate Wyatt Shaul. Shaul wasted no time at all with men on
1st and 2nd, took a 1-0 count deep to left field on the line scoring
both Moulder and Sonderman before stopping on 2nd with a 2RBI
stand up double. Tristan Shockley then drew the free pass to 1st
which brought up the Giants top of the order hitter, Marc Rossolo
who took a Gary Richardson fastball the other way for a line
drive single over the head of Condos at 2nd to drive in Shaul from
2nd. Christian Doyle grounded out to short but advanced
Shockley and Rossolo into scoring position when Andy Renz
Marc stepped into the box and split the left side of the outfield with a

Shaul smashed a single

rallying the Giants deep drive gapper scoring both Shockley and Rossolo with a
double. Feeling left out, Carlos Toledo creased a huge blast to
left center which hit the bottom of the fence for an RBI double. Ethan Moulder then pulled off a
full swing bunt which was hit hard enough to get past the pitcher but weak enough to allow
Moulder to reach 1st before Lawyer at short could get to the
crawling ball and throw to first. Patrick Renz then work a full
count walk as well as Sean Sonderman which scored Toledo
and racking up another RBI for the rookie. Wyatt Shaul then
got another at bat for the 4th and tried to go the other way this
time but flew out to the right fielder, Woody to retire the side
but not before our Hometown Heroes added another 7 runs to
their tally. The home half of the 4th brought the bottom of the
Outlaw order and Andy Renz continued to pound the corners
sitting down Woody with a wicked curveball. Campbell who
replaced Friend at left, then scorched a laser to the fence for a
double bringing up the Outlaw 2nd baseman, Condos who went
down swinging as did the top of the order batsman, Caleb
Crump.
th
The 5 inning brought Tristan Shockley to the plate who managed a ground ball back to
the mound, but the Evanston pitcher, Richardson couldn’t find the handle and Shockley reached
base on the error. Marc Rossolo then connected for another single advancing Shockley to 2nd.
Christian Doyle fell victim to Richardson’s curve and went down looking, Andy Renz then went
down swinging, Carlos Toledo then hit a ground ball to Lawyer at short who threw to Condos at
2nd trying for a 6-4-3 double play, but Condos was catching and throwing before the ball got to
him and was charged with an error as Toledo got to first on the fielder’s choice. All eyes were
on Ethan Moulder as he walked to the plate with the bases loaded. Moulder channeled all his
strength and swung at a Gary Richardson fastball and crushed a monster blast to the right center
power alley. The Faithful held their collective breathes as it had the height and the distance to
be a grand slam homerun, but the wind held it up a bit and it literally hit the bottom of the fence
on the fly. All Moulder could do was stand at 2nd and smile at what almost had happened. The
bottom of the 5th was do or die for the host team Evanston
Outlaws as they were down 15-0 and needed at least 5 runs to
keep playing and avoid the “10 run mercy rule after 5 innings
of play”. Renz smelled blood in the water though and knew
exactly what he had to do. Climbing the hill, he quickly sat
down Lawyer and Morrill swinging, allowed big Gary
Richardson a single before mowing down Coate to shut out the
Outlaws for the first game of the day.

The clouds started building over the home field of the Evanston crew, the winds picked
up a bit and the possibility of rain looked eminent.
The Outlaw team took the field looking a little hang-dog after the first game shellacking
from the visiting Jackson team. The previous games catcher, Coate now took the mound and
looked to be as strong as Gary Richardson in game one. Christian Doyle started things off for
our Hometown Heroes with a line drive base hit over the head of the outlaw 2nd baseman Lester
after Marc Rossolo grounded out to Lester earlier. Andy Renz watched 4 go by and took his
position at 1st, Carlos Toledo fell victim to one of Coate’s inside fastballs and
uncharacteristically went down swinging. Ethan Moulder then hit a slow roller to the Evanston
shortstop, Lawyer who again tried to swing a double play starting with a throw to 2nd but to no
avail as both Andy Renz and Moulder were too quick for the Outlaw middle infield and everyone
was on base safely. With bases loaded, big brother Patrick Renz, with a 3-2 count gave Coate
the stink eye and forced a walk out of him scoring Doyle giving P Renz an RBI the easy way.
Early frustration was beginning to mount on Coate as with 2 outs and the bases loaded with
Giants, Coate’s first offering to Wyatt Shaul was a curveball outside that the catcher Campbell
took his eye off of and allowed the ball to roll back to the fence scoring A Renz on the passed
ball and moving everyone else up 90 feet. Shaul took the next pitch and with his nice compact
swing, pulled a shot through 3rd and short for an RBI base hit scoring Moulder. Relief came to
Coate as Sean Sonderman went down swinging to end it for the Giants offense. Long tall Ethan
Moulder made his way to the hill for the Giants. Moulder doesn’t have quite the velocity as his
older brother, Lucas “The Horse” Moulder who generally overpowered his opponents with
85mph+ fastballs and hard breaking curves, but the younger Moulder’s bag of tricks is full with a
variety of pitches which at this writing remains top secret. Caleb Crump however wasn’t
intimidated as he took a first pitch fastball deep to the gap between Patrick Renz in center and
Paul Vik in right for a stand up double to start things off for the Outlaws. Lawyer then hit a
routine grounder to Rossolo at 2nd , bringing up TJ Morrill who took an 0-1 curveball back up the
middle for an RBI base hit. Big Gary Richardson, the Evanston clean-up hitter then caught up
with a fastball and hit a grounder to Rossolo at 2nd who hurried the play too much and bobbled
the ball allowing Richardson to reach base on the error and Morrill to advance to 2nd. Moulder
regained his composure though as he went straight after the catcher, Campbell sitting him down
swinging and the other half of the home team battery, Coate swung at a first pitch mystery ball
from Moulder and only managed a pop out to a waiting Christian Doyle at first.
The 2nd inning offensive philosophy for
the Giants was to try and wear down the pitcher
as much as possible to not only see how strong
the opposing pitchers are, but in the event of
bullpen relief, how deep that bullpen is. Paul
Vik started things off for Jackson managing a
full count walk, then Marc Rossolo got it
together and laced a line drive double the other
way between center and right advancing the very
quick Vik to 3rd. Christian Doyle then tried to
pull the ball down the 3rd base line but a waiting
Caleb Limb held Vik on 3rd and fired a bullet to
Morrill at first to nab Doyle. Andy Renz then
sat down swinging, bringing up the Giants clean
up man, Carlos Toledo who ripped a first
Ethan Moulder rips a single starting things for the Giants
offering over 3rd for an RBI single to start the
Giants merry-go-round again. Now it’s the lefties turn. Ethan Moulder stings the ball over the
head of Lester at 2nd for an RBI single scoring Rossolo, Patrick Renz took a 1-0 fastball the other
way, fooling the shifted Friend allowing both Toledo and Moulder, who was on 1st, to score with
a 2 RBI stand up double. Shaul then popped out to Lester at 2nd to retire the side. Limb was up
for the Evanston boys and reached base on an error by 1st baseman, Christian Doyle who
misjudged the throw allowing the ball to tick off his glove. Moulder then sat down Friend, but
quickly hit Lester in the numbers as he was trying to move him back off the plate. Caleb Crump
then walked, bringing up Lawyer who hit a high fly ball to Vik in right who eyed it and reeled it
in. Lester on 2nd was a bit too anxious to get things going for the Outlaws and blitzed to 3rd, but
left too early as an appeal was called and Lester was ruled out by the field Umpire. It was 3
quick outs for Moulder but a very unconventional 3 outs, but we’ll take them.
The top of the 3rd inning had our
Heroes up 7-2 and the Boys from Paradise
didn’t want to leave anything up to chance
as Sean Sonderman smacked a line drive
double to the fence in left field, Paul Vik
worked his magic and managed another
full count walk. Marc Rossolo took
advantage of a misjudged fly ball to left
thereby loading the bases on the error for
Christian Doyle who had been seen in the
dugout going through a number of odd
gyrations and loud incantations involving
spit and dead animal parts to break his
slump from games past. It all paid off as
Doyle took a 1-2 fastball from Coate deep
over the head of the centerfielder Crump
for a 2RBI double scoring Sonderman and
Vik. Andy Renz must have been too
pooped to pop as he sat down for a second Sean Sonderman watches a double leave the infield
time swinging giving the “Torpedo”
another turn at bat. Carlos ripped another base hit to left and advanced to 2nd on the bobbled
effort of Friend in left. Ethan Moulder then tried to hit one up the middle but it was nabbed by
the quick responding Coate on the mound, nabbing Moulder at 1st. Patrick Renz then leaned
into one and was awarded 1st thereby loading the bases for Wyatt Shaul who watched the Umpire
ring him up as he looked at 3. The bottom half of the 3rd showed a confident Giants defense as
Morrill grounded out to Rossolo at 2nd, Richardson grounded out to Sonderman at short and
Moulder confused Campbell with a hopping fastball on the outside corner to record the Giants
most efficient defensive inning of the weekend with 3 batters, 3 outs and 7 pitches.
Back to offense for our guys. The Giants bottom of the
order has proved to be as productive as the top of the order as
Sean Sonderman hit one that was too hot to handle at 3rd,
reaching base on the error. With eyes like a surgeon, Paul
Vik again confounded Coate with a full count walk. Coach
Sean Triplett with men on 1st and 2nd and an 8 run lead, thought
he would try something new. Having Tristan Shockley, who
took the place of Marc Rossolo, square around for a bunt, 1st
and 3rd charged the plate only to see Shockley pull the bat away
and Sonderman standing on 3rd and Vik grinning at 2nd.
Shockley then put the bat on the ball and hit a long fly can of
corn to center allowing Sonderman to easily score from 3rd on
the sacrifice fly. Christian Doyle evidently felt so good with
his performance at the plate, he put away his chicken bones,
ostrich feathers and Zulu sheet music as Coate broke a 12 to 6
curveball over the plate sending Doyle back to the dugout to
Sean Sonderman held the Outlaws at think about it. Andy Renz also couldn’t get the monkey off
bay for a Giants win
his back as he grounded out routinely to Lawyer at short.
Coach Triplett relieved Moulder with rookie Sean Sonderman on the mound as Moulder and the
rest of the Giants pitching staff still needs time to build their endurance. The tightness of the
Jackson infield of the previous inning seemed to go back to sleep as Tristan Shockley was
completely fooled on a high chopper to 2nd, allowing Coate to reach base on the error. Sean
Sonderman got that out back though as from the mound, he whirled and fired to Christian Doyle
at 1st picking off the napping Coate. Caleb Limb then hit a ground ball past the lethargic
Shockley for a base hit. Lamb then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and 3rd on a passed ball.
Sonderman got it together however and proceeded to mow down Mike Woody who took the
place of Friend in left field and rung up Lester with a slow curve which broke late over the plate
for the 3rd out.
Carlos Toledo struck first for the Giants as he hit his third base hit of the game and
promptly stole second from the tiring mound commander, Coate. Ethan Moulder, taking a cue
from Paul Vik worked the count full and then drew the walk. Patrick Renz pulled a hat trick
with a line drive single to the gap in right center scoring the ‘Torpedo” from second, thereby
picking up another RBI. Andrew Bressler who took the place of Wyatt Shaul in right field

Carlos Toledo went 3 for 4 in the giants win

worked a full count but went down looking

and Sean Sonderman did the same thing only
swinging. Coate was proving he still had gas
in the tank when Paul Vik strode to the plate.
Vik, perhaps tired of all the walks, took a
mighty swing at a 2-2 count and caught Limb
playing a bit too deep in the pocket at 3rd for
his full swing bunt. Vik who is not at all
slow, booked to 1st, beating out the throw and
recording an infield hit. Tristan Shockley
then took a first pitch offering from the tired
Coate to left center for an RBI single scoring Moulder
who was hanging out at 3rd. Christian Doyle needs to
tune up his bongo drums as he went down swinging in
the wind to end it for the Jackson offense.
It didn’t look good for the home team as they needed 2
runs to keep playing into the 6th or a quick11 runs to
take the lead away from the visiting Giants. Sean

Andrew Bressler in right field

Sonderman quickly dispatched Caleb Crump, Lawyer walked, Morrill then hit a line-drive base
hit past the diving glove of Ethan Moulder at short. Big Gary Richardson then hit a ground ball
to Moulder at short who cleanly gloved the ball, stepped on 2nd to nab the advancing Morrill and
throwing a perfect strike to Doyle at 1st for a very smooth 6-3 double play to end the game and
secure a second 10 run mercy rule win for our Heroes. Doyle could be heard mumbling some
kind of voodoo refrain to himself as he hustled back to the dugout before celebrating with the
rest of his crew.

twenty percent is execution.”

The View From The Cheap Seats-

The Giants are out to an unprecedented 4-0 undefeated season so far this year, but don’t be
fooled. The Evanston squad, like the Riverton team has been plagued with a large group of
graduating seniors last year and are also in the midst of a rebuilding year. Pitchers for the
Outlaws, Gary Richardson and Mr. Coate performed well from the mound mowing down a
combined 12 Giants but walked a total of 14 plus hitting 2 unlucky Giants. Andy Renz had his
best outing the Faithful have ever witnessed sitting down 13 Outlaws in the game 1 shutout.
Ethan Moulder also had a good showing striking out 3, walking 1 and retaliating with 1 hit
batsman, unintentional of course. Sean Sonderman finished for Moulder with a strong presence
also striking out 3. The Jackson infield leaves a little to be desired though as over confidence,
slow feet and misjudged catches and throws were all over the place. In order for the Giants to
play well against some of the older clubs they will face this season, Coach Triplett and the Giants
will certainly have to commit a bit more to their practices during the week.
