What is it that the learners are going to learn and what is it
that they know already? Very often the learners hear and experience social injustices but they don’t know what they are causing to their well-being and where to go for help in order to stop or prevent them.
The learners
The lesson is designed for the grade 9(14-16 years old) at
township school and they are coming from poverty stricken community where there is high rate of unemployment (from informal settlement). They know very little about environmental problems and its effects.
Some of the social injustices that they are experiencing:
families abusing alcohol and drugs, witnessing crime and post traumatic disorder, domestic violence, divorces, abuse in all forms parents being unemployed, lack of shelter and starvation etc.
Some of the institutions that can help the victims: Social
workers at the social services, local police stations, child line-0800 55555, legal aid, growing own vegetable garden, government assisting with feeding schemes, encouraging people to start their own businesses etc.
Enviromental issues to be learnt: pollution especially air and
water pollution, global warming, deforestation and veld fire. Their effects are-not breathing clean air will cause breathing problems and eventually lung problems, not drinking clean water will lead to diseases such as cholera, if trees are cut unnecessarily we won’t have enough clean air to breath and etc. Encouraging families to plant trees, to stop polluting water ,water, to discouraging people from cutting trees will minimise the above mention environmental challenges. The government should also encourage people to use common transport.
