EXTREME
ACCESS
POINT 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme, based
on the cutting-edge IEEE 802.11g
wireless draft specification,
delivers nearly five times the
bandwidth of the 802.11b standard. The new
AirPort Extreme Base Station can serve up to 50
Mac and Windows users simultaneously. It comes
with everything from wireless printing to a USB or
Ethernet printer to power tools for administrators,

What to do with a redundant
Conversion FAU Glasgow U.K.
of FAU to Atlantic Telecom provided a public telephone
WAP11 service in Glasgow using a 2.4Ghz wireless
system developed by Tadiran / InnoWave.
Subscribers were provided with Fixed Access
Units (FAU's) which came in two flavours, voice
and 'data'. The voice model provided two standard
voice lines, and the 'data' model provided one
high-bandwidth voice line for V.90 modems. The
FAU's were mounted to the roofs and walls of
buildings, and pointed in the direction of the
nearest 'base station' with line-of-sight.

Unfortunately, Atlantic went bust. A bit of

guesswork suggests the electronics in the FAU's
were only capable of 64k data speeds, which is
not very useful for bridging LAN's. Instead, we
make use of the excellent weatherproof casing,
and the flat-panel antenna. Two such FAU's were
obtained for experimentation, and the results were
pleasing.

For our trial, we used the Linksys WAP11

Wireless Access Point. It comes with RPTNC
connectors on the back panel, which seem to be
almost impossible to source, so the first thing to
do is remove the circuit from it's plastic case.
Remember this will invalidate your warranty etc
etc... The RPTNC's are connected to the
transceiver on short patch leads, terminating in
MMCX plugs which connect to what resembles a
PCMCIA card with big ears. These patch leads
can be pulled out. We cut the RPTNC connectors
off these leads, and soldered the loose end
directly to the antenna circuit board.

Although the DG834(G) seems to be a great

good part of its users.
Therefore, we decided to have a look into the box,

Power Over Ethernet (HOWTO)

WARNING: Don't try this unless you have

some electric clue. 12v isn't going to kill you,
but you may cause serious damage to your
access point and other equipment. Don't
blame me if something goes wrong. I'm not
an eletrical engineering major, I'm just a
networking guy who wanted cheap PoE
modules, and decided to write about how I
did it. Also there is no set standard (as of
03/19/02) as to which pairs get the positive
power, and which pairs get the negative
power. Measure your equipment carefully
so you don't damage it.

A number of Access Point manufacturers

(Lucent, Symbol) are now offering Power
over Ethernet add-on's for their Access
Points. A PoE module inserts DC voltage into
the unused wires in a standard ethernet cable
(pairs 7-8 and 4-5). The idea is to supply the
AP's power and UTP ethernet connectivity
requirements via a single ethernet cable. This
works great in areas where you may not have
power and/or ethernet easily accessible, like a
roof. This also allows you to more easily
place the AP closer to the antenna, thus
reducing signal loss over antenna cabling.
Ethernet signal travels well over CAT 5
cable; 2.4ghz signal doesn't do as well over
antenna cabling. Also ethernet cabling is
much cheaper than antenna (LMR-400)
cabling. There are currently two types of PoE
adapters: a module jack or hub-like device
for multiple access points. The following
hack creates a simple PoE module pair.

frequently, I didn't concentrate much on
neatness when mounting the gear inside the
Pelican case. Seen here is the WAP11 circuit

double-stick tape, the switching regulator
(top left) held to the wood-panel substrate by
some plastic ties, the LM317T regulater for

the bottom right is a PIC 16F873 to control

good - I changed to a shunt regulator using a

Toshiba SG20 Linux WLAN
Toshiba SERVER
SG20 Toshiba's Computer Systems Group (Irvine, CA)
LINUX recently introduced the Magnia SG20 wireless
mobility server, a compact, Linux-based portable
wireless server. About the size of a typical
notebook computer, the appliance-like device is
intended to make it easy to pack up an entire
network and take it on the road. Described by
Toshiba as a "wireless network in a box that
allows users to securely access and share files,
printers, and an Internet account," the Magnia
SG20 is targeted toward small and medium-sized
offices, mobile consultants, remote offices in large
organizations, home offices, and other
applications needing mobile networking
capability.

By simply adding a wireless PC Card, the Magnia

SG20 seamlessly connects wireless-enabled
SERVER devices using Wi-Fi technology (802.11b) without
the need for an external 'wireless access point'.
The system offers a number of other useful server
features, including web caching, content filtering,
backup, email services, and remote
administration. Configurable firewall protection
guards against unwanted intrusion over the
Internet, and the device also provides a virtual
private network (VPN) feature which offers secure
access to authorized users when connecting from
offsite locations.

Internally, the Magnia SG20 is based on an Intel

566MHz Celeron processor with up to 512MB
ECC SDRAM (128MB is standard). The system
comes with one or two 2.5-inch EIDE 15GB or
30GB hard drive (both drives must be of equal
capacity). A simple status display is built directly
into the device; it consists of a 2-line by 16-
character backlit LCD, along with a scroll button.

Overview: Description of Installation Tasks

A point-to-point microwave link may be installed by two people in a 2-3 day period,
including systems test and network integration.

Following are phases of a link installation in typical order of performance:

Pre-Installation Walk Through

The purpose of the pre-installation walk through is to determine:
• Location of the antenna based on line of sight and building manager approval
• Most suitable mount type (e.g., wall mount or tripod)
• Location of rack-mounted Indoor Unit (typically in computer room)
• Length and route of cable path from Outdoor Unit (ODU) to Indoor Unit (IDU)

Install Phase
• Installation of antenna mount
• Attachment of antennas to mount
• Attachment of Outdoor Unit (ODU) to antenna
• Run coax from ODU to IDU
• Mount Indoor Unit (IDU)
• Power IDU and Program Frequencies
• Align Antennas

System Test & Network Integration

• Independent microwave link test (laptop to laptop with test data)
• Connect IDU network ports (e.g., 100Base-T) to LAN switch or IP router
• Record optimal receive signal levels at time of cutover for reference in troubleshooting.
