This release is being issued to share information about two unusual incidents which took
place in Puerto Penasco and the strong security response which is underway in order to
ensure that they remain isolated. Puerto Penasco has enjoyed a long reputation as a safe,
family destination and it is a priority of the State of Sonora and City that it remain that
way for many years to come.

On Friday, June 18 a fleeing car was pursued to a point 30 minutes south of Sonoyta and
there overtaken by organized criminal elements. A confrontation took place and the car
was found abandoned by police when they arrived. There was gunfire and an anonymous
source reported this incident to the police, leading to their arrival on the scene.

On Saturday, June 19 at approximately 11:30pm there was a failed attack on the

municipal Chief of Police Erick Landagaray and his driver. The assailants were
unsuccessful and the chief is safe, recovering from gunshot wounds in a Sonora hospital.
He is listed officially in “critical but stable condition.” Lt. Lazaro Hernandez has been
appointed to serve as acting chief of police and the municipal force is operating normally
as per its standard contingency plans. All City activities are on their formal course
including that of the Mayor with his normal schedule.

Local, state and federal authorities are already coordinating with the business community
to ensure that both Puerto Penasco and the entire travel corridor from Lukeville to the
beach destination remains secure. A meeting is planned for Tuesday to further coordinate
this strong security response, after which we will provide additional information to the
press and business community.

The Puerto Penasco community, both Mexicans and Americans, has been surprised by
these two unprecedented incidents, and we are already mounting a strong response to
ensure that they do not affect tourists or the local tourism industry. Thousands of
Americans , Canadians and Mexicans visit Puerto Penasco on a weekly basis, and these
welcome and valued visitors remain a pillar of the local and Sonoran economy and their
security is and will remain as our top priority.
