Secretary  General's  Message  

ISFTE  2010   Congratulations  to  Marta  Luz  Sisson  de  Castro  and  her  
committee  for  a  very  successful  30th  anniversary  of  the  
International  Society  for  Teacher  Education  (ISfTE)  Seminar!  
It  was  academically  stimulating  complemented  by  engaging  
social  activities.  
 
Thanks  also  to  the  keynote  speakers:  Sybil  Wilson  (Canada),  
Robert  Verhine  (Brazil),  Earl  Shorris  (USA),  and  Anna  Hugo  
(South  Africa).    
 
Special  Thanks   And  a  VERY  special  thanks  to  John  Hansen  (USA)  and  Marta  
Luz  Sisson  de  Castro  (Brazil)  for  the  development  and  
production  of  a  commemorative  30th  anniversary  book,  
Commemorating  Seminars  Around  the  World  for  30  Years.  
For  long-­‐standing  members,  I’m  sure  the  book  provided  a  
smile  as  they  reminisced.  For  newer  members,  the  book  
provided  a  retrospective  of  the  organization.  
 
For  general  membership,  copies  of  the  30th  anniversary  book  
are  still  available.  Information  on  how  to  purchase  a  copy  will  
be  forthcoming  on  the  ISfTE  website.    
 
New  ISfTE  Members   Welcome  again  to  the  newcomers  to  ISfTE!!!  We  all  hope  that  
you  found  the  seminar  experience  both  rewarding  and  
productive.    Furthermore,  we  trust  you  had  opportunities  to  
make  new  friends  and  establish  collaborative  efforts  in  the  
future  as  we  all  continue  to  look  to  improve  teacher  education  
around  the  world.

Meetings   General  Business  Meeting,  and  the  JISTE  Editorial  Board  
  posted  on  the  ISfTE  website  (http://isfte.org  ).    
 
 
 

Other  Publication  available  

Also,  Warren  Halloway  (Australia)  (whallowa@une.edu.au)  and  John  Mauer  
(Australia)  have  a  publication  entitled  International  Research  in  Teacher  
Education:  Current  Perspectives  that  will  also  be  available  at  the  upcoming  
Seminar.  Information  on  ordering  this  important  publication  is  available  at  the  ISfTE  
website.  

Future  ISfTE  Seminar  Sites  

•  2012—Bhutan:  Warren  Halloway  (Australia)  and  John  Mauer  (Australia)  will  
providing  significant  support  to  the  co-­‐convenors  (Dr.  Kezang  S.  Sherab,  Dr.  
Phintsho  Choden,  and  Dr.  Kezang  Tshering).  

•  2012—Bahrain:  Numan  Al-­‐Musawi  will  be  working  closely  with  the  department  
chair,  Dr.  Shamsan  Al  Mannai,  in  preparing  for  the  ISfTE  Seminar  at  the  University  of  
Bahrain.  
•  2014—Hong  Kong:  Jacky  Pow  has  secured  the  support  of  Dr.  Janet  Draper,  Head  of  
the  Department  of  Education  Studies,  HKBU,  for  our  visit  in  2014.  
 

Election  Results  
The  membership  has  elected  the  following  two  members  to  serve  a  3-­‐year  term  
on  the  ISfTE  Executive  Committee:  Dr.  Cornel  DaCosta  (England)  and  Dr.  Peggy  
Saunders  (USA).  Congratulations!  Thanks  to  all  who  voted.

Dr.  Sybil  Wilson  (Canada),  keynote  speaker,  began  the  30th  
ISfTE  Seminar  by  getting  participants  to  imagine  a  better  
world  and  what  we,  as  teachers,  can  do  in  her  address  titled,  
“Educating  Teachers  for  a  Better  World.”  

 
 
 
 

Dr.  Robert  Verhine  (Brazil),  keynote  speaker  and  higher  

education  evaluation  expert,  spoke  on  “The  Evaluation  of  
Teacher  Training  in  Brazil:  Some  Findings  from  a  Nationwide  
Effort”  and  the  various  external  influences  and  factors  
impinging  on  the  process.  
 

 
 
Earl  Shorris  (USA),  keynote  speaker,  in  his  address  
titled,  “At  the  Shrine  of  the  Bald-­‐Headed  Tinker,”  
discussed  his  educational  work  with  global  
underserved  communities.  
 

 
Benjamin  Zufiaurre  Goicoechea  (Spain)  introduced  the  
seminar’s  last  keynote  speaker,  Anna  Hugo  (South  
Africa).  Anna’s  address,  “Teacher  Training:  My  Lessons  
Learned  in  Distance  Education,”  provided  a  brief  
history  of  the  changes  in  teacher  education  in  South  
Africa.
