J Sainsbury, 1869
Sainsbury's was founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann (née Staples), in London, England, and grew rapidly during the Victorian
era.

1869
 1869, We opened our first store in Drury Lane. 1882 
 1882, We started to sell own-brand products
 1898, Our longest established supplier – Lloyd Maunder – started supplying us with
meat and poultry.
 1914, We started to recruit women to help with colleague shortages during the
First World War
 1916, We set up our training school in Blackfriars, ensuring our colleagues were
the best trained.
 1944, We halved labels on our cans, to save paper and help the war effort.
 1946, The first issue of our colleague magazine, the Journal, arrived in store.
 1950, Our self-service  stores opened, years before our competitors.
 1961, We became the first food retailer to computerise distribution.
 1969, Our own brand lines accounted for 50% of our turnover.
 1970, We introduced the  first bakeries, fresh fish counters, petrol stations and
coffee shops into our stores
 1975, Our first Savacentres opened, expanding our range to include non-food
products.
 1989, We introduced the first ever carrier bags made from recycled material.
 1991, To encourage our customers to reuse carrier bags, we launched our Penny
Back scheme for charity.
 1994, We were the first major supermarket in the UK to sell Fairtrade food.
 2004, We launched the TU fashion range in 160 stores.
 2005, We launched Try something new today, marking the end of a disappointing
period in our history, and a return to what our customers want.
 2007, Our first Make the Difference day encouraging carrier bag reuse, was a
massive success.
 2007, We were the first retailer to convert all our bananas to 100% Fairtrade.
 2008, We were the first retailer to launch our own brand 1% fat milk.
 2009, Sainsbury’s was the largest retailer to completely remove battery farmed
eggs from its shelves.

home delivery shopping service is also available to nearly 90 per cent of UK households.

Sainsbury's Supermarkets is the UK's longest standing major food retailing chain, having

Sainsbury's Online
Our online food home delivery service delivers over 100,000 orders a week, and is available
to nearly 90 per cent of UK households.
Sainsbury's Property
We have a significant portfolio which includes 297 freehold and long leasehold properties,
and 43 properties within joint venture arrangements.
Sainsbury's Bank
Sainsbury's Bank, a joint venture with HBOS (part of Lloyds Banking Group), provides a
range of quality products including insurances, credit cards, savings and loans.
Treatment of overseas workers
In a 2006 report the British anti-poverty charity War on Want revealed how Kenyan workers
supplying Sainsbury's with cut flowers face appalling conditions and poverty wages.
Labelling produce
In a 2006 report War on Want brought to light that Sainsbury's and other top UK
supermarkets sold produce labelled 'Made in Israel' but actually produced in illegal
settlements in the West Bank and the Golan Heights.
