THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S LETTER TO MUNDHIR, GOVERNOR OF BAHRAIN

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, MOST GRACIOUS, MOST MERCIFUL

From Muhammad messenger of Allah to Mundhir, Governor of Bahrain. Peace be upon
you. I praise Allah to you than whom there is no other Allah. And I bear witness that there is no
deity except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger – I remind you of Allah,
The Mighty Sublime. Whoever accepts admonition accepts it for his own soul. And whoever
obeys my envoys and follows their guidance, he has in fact, obeyed me and whoever accepted
their admonition he has, in fact accepted my admonition. My envoys have praised your conduct
and I have recommended you to your people. Therefore, leave the Muslims (and all others) in
what they believe in. I have pardoned the criminals so accept their excuses. So long as you
keep on the right, we will not remove you from your office. Whoever, is firm on his (old religion
of) Christianity or Judaism must pay Jizyah (tax).
