Generations of Mobile Communications

 1G The first Generation (analog)

 2G The second Generation (digital)
 GSM introduced in 1992
 3G The third Generation (evolution in
terms of data speed & services)
Introduction
• Key member of 3G identified by ITU.
• Evolution from 2G in terms of data speeds
and services.
• Compatible with GSM networks.
• First launched in Japan in 2001.
• Now operating commercially in Austria,
UK, Sweden, Italy.
Definition
 A third-generation mobile and wireless
communications system capable of
supporting multimedia services, beyond
the capability of second generation
systems such as GSM .
Key features
 Capacity to serve more than 50% of
population
 Wide range of services
 Voice
 Text messaging
 Low data rates & high data rates
• 144kb/s,384kb/s,1Mb/s
 Internet
 Worldwide roaming
Handover
 Definition
Handover is a procedure, involving a
change of physical channels, radio
channels, involved in an association
between a mobile terminal and the fixed
network while maintaining this association.
Handover
 Types
 Seamless and Non-Seamless HO
 Hard and Soft HO
 Forward and Backward HO
 Depending on why the HO is initiated
 Radio Link Driven (due to movement of MT)
 Traffic Driven ( for uniform distribution of traffic)
 Service Driven ( for specific service, QoS)
Comparison to GSM

 New frequency band

Network data rates
CELLS
 Mobile communication system
configurations are based on cells.
 The cell is a circular area surrounding the
base-stations that is delimited by the
radius of reach of base-stations signals.

 Same frequency, different users

 GSM – 0.5ms time slot for each freq.
which makes HO difficult
Frequency and time division (FDMA &
TDMA)
UMTS – spreads radio signals using CDMA
Easier HO
