Objective

 To develop and fabricate the Fly Ash Reinforced

Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites in order to
improve significant properties such as strength,
stiffness, modulus, damping capacity and wear
resistance compared to unreinforced aluminium
metal
Composites
 Composite is a material composed of two or more
phases and having bulk properties differs from the
individual constituents
• Low density
• Temperature stability
• High electrical and thermal conductivity
• Adjustable co-efficient of thermal expansion
Metal Matrix Composite

 Pure aluminium-soft, ductile and weldability

 Mechanical properties are affected by
• Size
• Shape
• Volume fraction
• Matrix material
• Reaction at interface
Reinforcement
 Fly ash particle
 Obtained by the combustion of coal
 Major constituents are SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and
minor constituents are MgO, CaO, Na, K TiO2 etc.
 Precipitator and Cenosphere fly ash
 2-2.5 g/cm^3 and 0.7-0.9 g/cm^3
 Narrow and wide size ranges are 53-106µm and 0.5-
400µm respectively
Fly Ash Composition

Chemical composition
SiO2 ---- 64.80 %
Al2O3 ---- 24.01 %
Fe2O3 ---- 5.23 %
CaO ---- 2.76 %
MgO ---- 0.90 %
TiO2 ---- 0.50 %
LOI ---- 0.87-1.33 %
Dispersion Strengthening Mechanism
 The reinforcing agents are finely dispersed into a
soft ductile matrix. The strong particles restricts the
motion of dislocations and strengthens the matrix.
Stir Casting Technique

Furnace

Stirrer

Al Molten Metal
Experimental Procedure
 As received 60µm and sieved 76µm
 Preheated to 800°C for 2 hours
 Dispersed in molten Al which is at 770°C
 Preparation as 12 vol% AR, 6 vol% S, 12 vol% S

• Chemical reaction as,

2 Al + 3/2 SiO2 = 3/2 Si + Al2O3
2 Al + Fe2O3 = 2 Fe + Al2O3
Results
 Hardness test
• Brinell, rockwell, vickers hardness test etc
 Microstructure
• Precipitator fly ash
• Cenosphere fly ash
 Density and porosity
 Tensile and compressive properties
 Damping behaviour
 Wear test
