After 75 years of continuous operation, the former greyhound track could no longer compete in a drastically changed gaming market that includes casinos and racinos in neighboring states, officials indicated. “Until the early 1990's when the Connecticut casinos opened, Wonderland was considered the premier greyhound track in the world,” said Dalton. “This is an emotional day for all of us, and the most difficult part of itis the hardworking people who have been given notice that they no longer have a job. Most of our employees have been with us for decades and we are trying to be as supportive as we can as they cope with these extremely difficult circumstances.” “We would all like to thank Speaker Robert DeLeo, Representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein, Senator Anthony Petruccelli and Revere Mayor Thomas Ambrosino for their efforts over the years to protect the jobs of our employees,” Dalton added. Dalton said that the track's remaining employees were given notice this week that the track operations would be suspended After a ballot initiative prohibiting greyhound racing passed in Massachusetts in 2009, Wonderland had been open for simulcasting only in 2010, Wonderland and Suffolk Downs entered an agreement in 2008 to partner on potential gaming development initiatives. Their partnership includes an option for Suffolk Downs to purchase Wonderland and develop the property which remains in effect and provisions for job opportunities at Suffolk Downs for displaced Wonderland employees should gaming be authorized there.
