Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

This act relates to privacy. As a part of DeVry University’s commitment to FERPA, please make note of
the following:
1) Please do not place student names in the subject lines of emails. This is part of the
University’s Compliance Policy, which is available in Doc Sharing of the Online Faculty
Resource Center. Sometimes a student will place his/her own name in a subject line of an
email. Remove the name and replace it with the course section.
2) Do not disclose grades via email or over the phone to prevent this information from ending up
in the hands of a third party. Ask the student to look at the comments in the gradebook or the
grade to date in the gradebook. Even if a student calls to ask about his/her grade, ask the
student to login and look at the grade with you. That way you can discuss the grade as the
student is looking at it online. If the student is not online, please ask the student to call back
when he/she is online.
3) Never disclose information to a parent, friend, spouse, or any third party about a particular
student’s performance. If you receive a call or email from someone other than the student,
please let your Faculty Management Team know so that they may work with Student
Services.
4) If someone calls or emails you from DeVry Student Services and asks for information about a
student’s performance, please let the party contacting you know that you are not at liberty to
discuss the student’s performance. Then immediately let your Faculty Management Team
know so they can verify that this person works for DeVry University. Student Services should
never call or email faculty directly to speak about a student, so this type of call would be
highly suspicious.
5) If someone calls or emails a faculty member from any agency (most likely Inside Track on the
undergraduate side) to ask for information about a student’s performance, please let this
party know that faculty are not at liberty to discuss students’ performance. Then immediately
let your Faculty Management Team know so they can verify that this person is contracted
with DeVry University. Inside Track should never call or email faculty directly to speak about
a student, so this type of call would be highly suspicious.
