Van Antwerp ‘Commanding General and Chief of Engineers Us Army Corps of Engineers 441.6. Street, NW Washington, DC 20314 Dear Lieutenant General Van Antwerp: With the approach of Hurricane Barl and other potentially damaging storms | am asking that the Amy Corps of Engineets prepare for possible emergency response tothe coastal areas of Brooklyn and Queens. In addition, the steady pace of stooms aver the last few years and the serious damage caused by them should signal that the Amy Corps of Engineers needs to prioritized long tem solutions to protect the New York coastline from future storms, Earl has already destroyed homes and caused power outages on several British Virgin Islands ‘and the National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Ear! will curve along the east coast. Hundreds of homes in Brooklyn and Queens ae at isk of being damaged or worse. On the Rockavays, all beaches between Beach 3rd to Beach 149th Streets lost between I and 6 feet of sand, Beach 87th to Beach 100th Steet beaches were the hardest hit, andthe boardwalk’s staircases and ramps on boardwalks were basically unusable, At Plumb Beach, the beach that ‘once provided a 40 foot buffer from tothe water is now less just afew yards of sand andthe water comes almost right up to Belt Parkway. Under normal cumstances hurricane Earl would pose a sesious threat, but our communities on ‘coastal Brooklyn and Queens were battered inthe winter by several storms and th loss of more ‘of out beach or any potential damage tothe Belt Parkway could be eatastrophic. Please prepare the Army Corps for potential emergency response to fallout from Hurricane Earl and provtize Tongstet solution t protest my constituents From future storms.
