Transitioning to CMMI V1.

August 25, 2010

As we approach the launch of CMMI V1.3 in November, 2010, we would like to tell you
about the transition period.

In order to ensure a smooth service system transition, we will allow continued use of
CMMI V1.2 models for appraisals for a year after release of CMMI V1.3. Based on our
planned release in November 2010, we will accept V1.2 appraisals that have an on-site
start date up to and including Wednesday, November 30, 2011. We will also allow the
delivery of V1.2 training courses to support V1.2 appraisal and process improvement
activities.

Since appraisal team members must be in our system as qualified to V1.2, we will
maintain the online upgrade path for potential appraisal team members who received
earlier versions of the required “Introduction to CMMI” training (V1.0 or V1.1). If an
appraisal team member takes the new V1.3 course during the transition period but will
be on a V1.2 appraisal, the Lead Appraiser will ensure “backward compatibility” of the
individual.

The update for the SCAMPI Appraisal Method will be released in December 2010. The
SEI will allow performance of V1.3 model appraisals by V1.2 qualified Lead Appraisers
(and of a V1.2 model with the V1.3 method) during the transition period. The SEI
Appraisal System (SAS) will depict which model and which method version was used
during the year of transition. (Since we believe both the models and the appraisal
method have been improved in V1.3, we encourage use of the V1.3 of both if possible.)

Just as we provided the online upgrade course mentioned above for V1.2, we will have a
similar one for V1.3 provided online by model release. We plan to have both SEI and
Partner capabilities to offer the Introductory courses (both CMMI-DEV and CMMI-SVC)
at the time of release of the three models in November, along with the supplements for
CMMI-ACQ and CMMI-SVC. Other CMMI courses (including a supplement for CMMI-
DEV for those starting their CMMI training with the Introduction to CMMI-SVC) will be
released as soon as possible in the transition period.
