Candidates are assessed on their ability to
understand various types of oral texts.

Application Evaluation
Listen to recorded texts twice.
Answer questions on them… 20 questions consisting of
information transfer, short-answer questions, 3-option
multiple-choice questions and 4-option multiple-choice
questions. The possible genres are:
Lecture Announcement
Talk Telephone conversation
Instructions Advertisement
Interview News
Briefing Meeting
Discussion Documentary
Listen carefully before filling in the blanks
with appropriate words.

Sometimes you will need to summarise what


you have heard .

You may also need to rephrase certain parts of


the text so that your answers will be accurate.
How to Score for the
Listening Component?
Identify the type of text you are
listening to and how to approach it.
Try to understand the main idea of the
dialogue or speech without
understanding the details or every
word.
Analyse how specific facts that the
speaker states support, or do not
support, what the speaker is getting at.
Follow the development of the point
or argument.
Take notes. Keep them brief.
Try to predict meaning from context.
Take note on the role of stress and
intonation in supporting meaning.
Focus on recognising and evaluating
attitude and opinion
Try to infer underlying meaning.
Work your answers within the word
limit given in the rubrics.
Try to recall what you have heard after
the recording has been played.
