3.6.1 Pressure in Moving Fluid
 The pressure in a moving (flowing) fluid depends on the speed motion.
 Many Malaysians enjoy “teh tarik” at hawker stalls. Do you notice
that the flow of the “teh tarik” becomes narrower and narrower when
it reaches the bottom as shown in photograph 3.6?

 This is because the speed of the folowing “teh tarik” increases as it

reaches the bottom and its internal pressure decreases. The higher the
pressure at the both sides of the following “teh tarik” causes it become
narrower.
3.6.2 Bernoulli’s Principle
 States that when the speed of a fluid increases,
the internal pressure in the fluid decreases and
vice versa.
 Can be air, a gas, a liquid or water.
 The air pressure at A is the highest.
 The air pressure at B is the lowest because air flows
through the narrowest part. So, atmospheric pressure
pushes water up the vertical tube.
 The air pressure at C is moderate.
 In this case, the moving fluid is air and not water.
 If a stream of air is blown over the upper surface
of a sheet of paper, the paper will rise.
 The air flowing fast over the top of the paper
produces low air pressure. The air underneath
the paper is stationary so the air pressure is
greater. The difference in air pressure produces
an upward resultant force pushing the paper
upwards.
 When air is blown between the two balls, a
low pressure area is produced.
 Atmospheric pressure which is higher at the
two sides push the balls towards each other.
 A ball is released from hold at the wide end of the
funnel. The ball does not drop.
 The air flowing fast above the ball produces low
pressure.
 The higher the atmospheric pressure below the ball
supports the ball and prevents it from dropping .
 A ball which does not rotate or spin will move stright.
 A ball which spins will cause a stream of air to move fast at its
upper part, so low pressure is produced (area B)
 A difference in pressure is created, which causes the spinning
ball to follow a cured path
 So, as a spinning ball moves through the air, it encounters a
force which moves sideways and causes the ball to curve. This
situation can be observed in a game of tennis, golf or a cricket.
