INTRODUCTION
BRAIN COMPUTER INTERFACE:-

A brain computer interface (BCI) is an

external device that communicates directly to
the brain of humans or animals through
neuron silicon interfaces.
HISTORY
o In early 1950s it was possible to implant electrodes into the
cortex of humans and animals .
o Beginning, in 1970’s, scientists experimented on monkeys
determining the fact to control the firing of neurons in brain.
o In 1999, the electrodes were embedded into the thalamus of
cats.
o A patient in year 2005 was able to successfully control an
artificial arm, moving cursor on computer and controlling the
television.
TYPES
 INVASIVE BCI:-
o Implanted directly into the brain.

 PARTIALLY INVASIVE BCI:-

o Inside the skull but outside the brain.

 NON INVASIVE BCI:-

o On the scalp.

METHODS
 NEURAL SCREEN NAVIGATION:-
 To explore HCI and to identify possibilities of navigating

computer screen.
 AWARE CHAIR:-
 Context-aware intelligent power wheelchair which

integrates environmental control, communication, and

multilevel prediction.
 BRAINTRAINER:-
 Teaches a person.

ADVANTAGES

 Easier to use .
 Provide information not available via other means
 Capable of total privacy.
 Portable/wearable.
 Provide information more quickly than natural

pathways.
DRAWBACKS

 There are about 100 billion neurons in a human brain.

 The blinking eyelids of the subject can generate much stronger

signals.
 Some BCIs still require a wired connection to the equipment.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

o Difficult to judge.
o If the advances of the 21st century match the strides of the
past few decades, direct neural communication between
humans and computers may ultimately mature and find
widespread use.
CONCLUSION

The conclusion is that brain-computer interface will bring us a

rapid progress in many fields. Our hope is to accelerate the
access to information and improve our ways of
communication. These are one of the main fields which will
exponentially accelerate our development because ease to
access and share information through communication is the
key to success.
