Agenda Date: September 1, 2010 (Emergency Meeting)

Assigned to:
Recommendations:
Action: PASSED (19-0)
President Pro Tempore: Seth Kester
Student Senate President: Jamie Steiner
Student Body President: Brad Krites

WHEREAS, pedestrian safety has become an issue facing the student body after numerous collisions
following the beginning of the Fall Semester, and

WHEREAS, increasing education would greatly assist in increasing pedestrian safety, and

WHEREAS, Carol Shelby, senior director of environmental health and public safety, was quoted in the
Purdue Exponent article “University officials recruit for crossing guard program,”1 as saying among their
proposed solutions to the pedestrian vehicle safety hazard “is enforcement, in which we will partner with
West Lafayette police, like we have been doing, and also Purdue police, who will begin issuing
jaywalking tickets to students…,”2 and

WHEREAS, “There are two levels of tickets that can be issued to jaywalkers. A fine can be between $115
and $135 if those jaywalking are stopped by a police officer of the city, state or, in some cases, Purdue
police. Since the University has its own system, Purdue police have the option to fine an individual $50,”3
and

WHEREAS, such tickets could financially burden students already strained by the current economic
climate,

THEREFORE, be it Recommended by the Purdue Student Government Senate that the West Lafayette
Police department and the Purdue Police department do not begin issuing tickets to students for
jaywalking violations, while increasing student education for the purpose of fostering a safer campus.

Be It Resolved that Purdue Student Government, through the Campus Safety Task Force, pursue an active
role in providing student feedback to help shape further education initiatives.

Be It Further Resolved that this piece of legislation be forwarded to Chief Dombkowski and Chief Cox.
