Analysis of ‘Freak’ .

180 degree rule

The 180 degree rule is

used here to show a
conversation between
two characters across a
table. The cameraman
tracks from one person
to the other to show
there positions in the
scene and each others
reactions.
Establishing shot
This shows the audience the change of scenery and shows that they are now at a
seaside in Brighton, and this is also what they can see. The fact that it is a sunny day
and looks nice can uplift the mood too.
Match on action

Here we see the boy

knocking on the door
and then again from the
girls point of view when
she opens the door. This
shows us the characters
reaction or emotion of
when she appears at
the door.
This gives us a
interpretation of the
character; how he is
feeling or what his
reaction is to the person
behind the door.
Over the shoulder

The over the shoulder shot is to see the expression of a character's face to the
discussion that is taking place. Here we see that the boys may be in an
argument or disagreement as the boy we see does not look to happy. Also the
character of who's shoulder we are looking over, is pointing at the boy, maybe
connoting he is angry.
Two shot

This is to show the characters relationship. Here the two people seem to be laughing
and joking with each other, connoting to the audience a good relationship between
the two. Also shows us that they enjoy each others presence.
Long shot

This helps us to see what the character is doing

fully.

It shows us a full length shot as the character

approaches us, to set the scene. Here we denote
that the character is running, from this you could
connote that she is maybe running away from
something or someone, jogging as a regular
exercise, or maybe running to something because
she is late or in a rush.
Close up
This is a close up of a young girls face, whilst she is on the phone. It seems to
be inside somewhere as we can see a window in the back ground. A close up is
used to show facial expression and that’s exactly what this shot does. The girls
face doesn’t look to over joyed or excited, she looks maybe disappointed or
fed up.
Rule of thirds

By obeying the rule of thirds the camera man has made sure that there is
something happening, or something for the audience to look at in every third of
the shot. Here we see a group of people who all seem to be throwing lights at a
wall.
Shot reverse shot

Here we can see both characters facial

expressions during a conversation
between them.

The girl in both these shots looks to be

maybe upset about something or
maybe has something on her mind. The
boy, who may be a brother, friend or
boyfriend, seems to be a bit more
uplifted so maybe connoting that he is
trying to cheer her up.
Angle shot (Low Angle)

This low angle shot is used to show the audience that the couple are happy. As it is
looking up at them, it makes them appear bigger, almost like a child's point of view.
