ORIGINS
OF POP PUNK
The genre of pop punk is almost two past genres merged together to create this new
individual and unique genre. Pop music was big at the time of the arrival of pop punk but
many artists didn’t want to just follow the cheesy and usual trend as they wanted to bring
their own stamp on things with the inspiration from bands like the sex pistols, the clash and
the buzz cocks. They merge the typical pop melodies with the fast punk tempos, loud
guitars, banging drums and the attitude of past punk stars.
PIONEERING ARTISTS
The two major pioneers and still today the biggest stars of pop punk
are Green day and Blink 182. Green day released their first album in
1994 called “Dookie”. It was an instant success selling millions of copies
world wide and singles they brought out were massive hits. They won a
handful of awards that year and were destined for bigger things. In
1997 the pop punk audience extended massively as Greenway released
“Nimrod” and Blink 182 released “Dude Ranch” which made the genre
massive as it spread throughout the world. Throughout the 90’s and
early 2000’s Blink 182 and Green day made Pop Punk mainstream with
many bands aspiring to be like them.
