Philosophy of Crime is a masterpiece of Pradeep Kumar. For those of us who don’t know who
Pradeep Kumar is, he was the judge, High Judicial Service in Allahabad High Court. He
graduated from Allahabad University and passed LL.B from Agra University and, thereafter,
topped in U.P Judicial Service Examination 1979. Apart from working in regular courts, he has
been posted on deputation in U.P Legal Aid & Advice Board and State Law Commission.

With this book the author Pradeep Kumar is trying to reveal the fundamental cause of crime, its
metaphysics and the process of salvation therefrom. The author in this book reflects the reason
behind the emergence of quantitative and qualitative crime on every inhabited patch of the globe
despite having a number of provisions and attempts to stop the commission of crime.

Moreover in this very book the author went on to discover the basic intent of the offender behind
the commission of the crime. This book reflects the human psychology in a scientific manner,
emphasizing upon the universal truth that man and the universal truth that man and the universe
are not the machine but a unique system of systems.

The learned author, Mr. Pradeep Kumar in this book has described the relationship between
cause and effect. According to him a cause is cause for an effect whereas an effect is effect of a
cause. Furthermore, the author has also described the theory of creation and continuity of the
universe of Aristotle in order to establish a cause and effect relationship between the different
stages in the commission of crime.

In this book the author has basically propounded one theory the environment is not chiefly
responsible for the crime causation. There are many factors both internal as well as external
which are responsible for the commission of crime. In his book, Mr. Pradeep Kumar has tried to
put lights on those factors only.

During the process of highlighting the psychological and metaphysical aspect behind the
commission of the crime the author has also tried to draw the attention of the readers towards the
different views behind the commission of crime. The author has discussed in brief the
determinism theory of the positivists and the free will doctrine of the classicalists. In between all
these the author has also put light on the theory of Atavism and the theory of abnormal
combination of chromosomes.

The learned author has divided the whole book of Philosophy of Crime in seven broad chapters
in which he has discussed about Crime as Natural Phenomenon, Crime waves, Crime Antenna,
Criminal Soul, Crime Causation and the factors behind the causation of the crimes, Metaphysics
of Crime and the Salvation of Crime.

.In the first chapter of this very book (Pg. 1-12) “Philosophy of Crime” the author has described
that the Law and Crime are not social or statutory phenomenon rather natural phenomenon. The
author has said that the knowledge of law came to man from analyzing the accumulated
experiences about the periodical changes occurring in the natural phenomenon. The author
further went on to say that Law of the Nature is the first ever law and it is the source of every
kind of laws in every society as the society is a resultant of the interactions between man and the
nature.

According to the author the glimpses of the cosmic mens rea are suspended in the nature. Nature
itself is has dichotomy of both positivity and negativity-good and evil. The author has beautifully
pointed out the crimes committed by the nature itself in the form of destructions. He has also

raised a very important question that from where did man adopt criminality since he exhibits the
entire natural phenomenon.

In the second chapter (pg. 13-22) the learned author has very beautifully and elaborately given
the description about the crime waves. The author has described the impact of the particular
colors on the body of the human beings due to their own combination of waves. The author has
described the impact of colors ranging from red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, lemon,
magenta and pink on the human beings. He also put emphasis on different combinations of
words whether thought, spoken or written that at times makes us happy and sad. According to the
author the combination of words release some waves which are the reasons behind different
kinds of emotions.

The author in this book has also described about the characteristics of the crime wave. According
to the author crime waves like other waves also follow the laws of the nature. Crime waves travel
both in material and non material medium just like light rays and planetary waves. This means
criminality would also welcome the astronaut who lands on Saturn. The author has compared the
behavior of crime waves with the homeopathic medicine i.e. the lowest the scale and quantity at
the time of release of energy is, highest the wavelength and potency of the wave would be.

According to the author two or more types of crime waves, through synthesis, may create new
types of crime waves containing the initial qualities of its parent waves at one hand and even
then remaining entirely different from it at the other. Dowry death in India is a new crime though
marriage has been an old institution. The author has also said that the crime waves are both
released and caught by criminals at all the levels of human consciousness and even that of
unconsciousness.

The learned author, Mr. Pradeep Kumar has also beautifully described the concept of criminal
antenna through the concept of cosmic eye, cosmic antenna, philosophical antenna and criminal
equilibrium. The author has described the place of the existence of criminal antenna situating
somewhere within the brain-mind combination where combustion of all criminal intentions take
place and which have the ability to perceive crime waves at any or all the levels of consciousness
and unconsciousness.

The author has also said that every living thing has inherent criminal intent in their nature. The
criminality has come in the DNA of human beings through the DNA of amoeba. The world is the
struggle between the good and evil forces consisting of waves. Actually the evil and good are
complementary to each other. The crimes related to the fundamental needs and committed under
the extreme pressure of those needs carry the emblem of naturality.

The author through the chapter of Metaphysics of Crime beautifully describes the role of nature
and the circumstances behind the commission of crime. He also pointed out that the evil
admissible by nature is though evil but agreeable. What he talked about is an equilibrium
between crime in the society and crime in the nature.

This book Philosophy of Crime is an interesting for the people who want to know the
psychological and philosophical view regarding the commission of crime. It is also a very good
example to understand the metaphysical aspect of the crime. The commission of the crime by
nature and the inherent criminality possessed by all living being are some of the readable
sections of this book. The identification of different colors and their effect on the human body is
also wonderful section of this book.

However, at places the book is a little dry for the lay readers because of the technical and
philosophical aspects he talks about like the criminal antenna, crime waves. Furthermore, the
concept of metaphysics of crime and salvation of crime are little complex.

This book aims to find out the factors behind the commission of the crime. The author’s deep
observations regarding the metaphysical and philosophical aspect of crime make this book an
interesting read.
