Guidance, counseling and psychotherapy

Guidance, counseling and psychotherapy contains many branches, however they are nothing
without their limitation. According to what I?ve understood, guidance is the process to helping
people or individual. When we talk about helping, it is not necessary help in the terms of
materials. It can be advices or something makes people appreciate themselves. Guidance means
we guide the people or individual to make important choices that can affect their life style. We
guide them so that they can do the best decision before go to the next step. For example in school
the academic adviser will help student make decisions such as deciding course of study. The
New York state Teacher Association published a report in 1935; defined guidance is the process
of assisting individuals in making life adjustment. It can be anywhere such as in the home,
school, community, at work and many more.

The next one is counseling. There are similarity between guidance and counseling but not totally
the same because there are little but different. The similarity is the goal. The goal for both of
these is to help people to solve their problem or help people so that that individual can gain more
insight about his or her problem. The differences are counseling more to the specific task or topic
and only certain person can be a counselor. But guidance is opposite, because all people can
guide someone as long as he or she has that experienced. In certain agencies counseling defined
to describe information and advices given on a particular topic, such as a healthcare issues and
family planning. Other than that, counseling is an art of skills because many professions can use
the counseling skills.
But keep remember here, someone who give an advise is not necessary a counselor. Because to
be a counselor you must qualified in certain study field. For example counseling skills can be
used by a nurse, teacher, manager, person and colleague. Counseling is a profession that deals
with personal, social, vocational, empowerment and educational. Normally people who came to
the counselor are not sick but they are stuck in their problems. They need somebody to help them
in order to ease their problem. Their problem required short term intervention and sometimes
long term intervention. This depends to the problem faced by the individual.
The frameworks for counseling are personal support, development support, problem solving and
therapeutic counseling. Personal support indicates to the concern and support. That means the
expression of our feeling. In the other hand, in development support, we will offer information to
them. For problem solving, we have to develop suitable skills and knowledge base. This will
provide a platform for helpful encounter. The last one is therapeutic counseling, this not only
provide support, information or skill to enable the resolution but goes futures.

The third one that I want to discuss is psychotherapy. Compared to the two topics that we?d
discuss just know it?s more to the supporting the emotional or mental process. For this third
topic, it is focuses on serious problems associated intra-psychic, internal and personal issues and
conflicts. However there are similarities between those three things. Such as all of these required
us to solve the problem, make decision and plan of action. Example of situation involved is
treatment of mental process. The therapy is providing in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

This usually includes increasing individual sense of well-being and reducing subjective

discomforting experience. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential
relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change and that are designed to
improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in
a family).
As a conclusion all these three terms are related each other but providing different methods of
helping people. However the main goal is the same, it is to help people to solve their problem or
to make it easier to solve. All the methods used are related to the mental and physical of human.

guidance counseling, byname COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE, the process of helping individuals

discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological potentialities and thereby
to achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness. The concept of
counseling is essentially democratic in that the assumptions underlying its theory and practice
are, first, that each individual has the right to shape his own destiny and, second, that the
relatively mature and experienced members of the community are responsible for ensuring that
each person’s choice shall serve both his own interests and those of society. It is implicit in
the philosophy of counseling that these objectives are complementary rather than conflicting.
The function of those who guide children and young people is not to effect a compromise
between the requirements of individuals on the one hand and the demands of the community on
the other. It is rather to orient the individual toward those opportunities afforded by his
environment that can best guarantee the fulfillment of his personal needs and aspirations.

Guidance, in this sense, is a pervasive activity in which many persons and organizations take
part. It is afforded to individuals by their parents, relatives, and friends and by the community at
large through various educational, industrial, social, religious, and political agencies and,
particularly, through the press andbroadcasting services. A part of such guidance may be the
giving of information that enables others to increase the scope of their exploratory behaviour.
The guidance counselor, for example, may provide information about a person’s own abilities
and interests as determined by psychological tests or about educational opportunities and the
requirements of various occupations. The competent counselor does not attempt to solve
people’s problems for them, however; the counselor tries instead to clarify the person’s own
thinking.

Professional counselors and counseling psychologists are commonly found in institutional

settings such as high schools and colleges, private industry, community agencies, prisons, and
the military, as well as in private practice. They are often called on to help individuals deal with
the grief of unexpected tragedies.

In conclusion, it is important to note that, though there is considerable difference between the two
concepts (as discussed above), guidance and counseling tend to converge and mostly go hand in hand.
This is because, the main goal of each of them is the same, it is to help people to solve their problem or
to make it easier to solve. All the methods used are related to the mental and physical of human.
Furthermore, the underlying principles of both concepts are very similar in that, in providing either of
the two services, the individual in question should be treated as distinct person, that is requiring one
strategy per person. Finally, guidance and counseling is not to be carried out by just anybody but rather
by professionally trained persons. If either of these is dealt with by any ordinary person, the chances of
helping the affected persons will be more than in helping them.
