How big is the mobile phone applications market?
How fast is the industry growing?
Interactive entertainment generates of revenue of
approximately $9 billion dollars in the U.S. alone.

Games are expected to surpass film box-office

revenues in the next couple of years.
According to the ESA, 60% of all Americans age six and older, or
about 145 million people, play computer and video games

35% of all Americans identified computer and video

games as the most fun entertainment activity. That's
more than television (18%) and movies (11%) combined.
What are
those figures
like in India?
As of April 2010, there are
400 million mobile phone
subscribers.

And 55 million internet users.

Looking at data in the February- March 2009 time frame, there were
a total of 105 million Indian consumers playing games on their mobile
phone.

Based on data gathered in April 2009 for Feb/March mobile game
users it is found that approx 30 million urban Indians use their mobile

It's a no-brainer
Mobile gaming/application development has a
robust future in India.
In the past, almost a third of Indian mobile data users
were restricted from mobile gaming by a lack of
sophisticated handset availability.
Handsets lag behind users’ desire for data capabilities; 94% of mobile
handsets in India operate on either GSM or CDMA One standards, both
with minimal data capabilities.

With the roll out of new handsets and networks, the gaming market could
expand 700% by 2010, to more than US$200m annually.
All handset manufacturers are now ready to launch smart phones
and online application stores. With the advent of the 3G GSM
network, the overall sales for mobile games/ apps will increase.
Application stores like Nokia-Ovi, Sony Ericsson, Airtel, Idea,
Aircel and many more are ready to launch
• What do mobile gaming/application developers do?

• Who are their clients?

• How does the business model work?

Telecom operators are clients for
Mobile app vendors.

All applications need to be certified

by telecom operators and the
mobile operating systems.
In return, operators share
a percentage of revenue
earned

Can be between 60-90% but the

larger base in India makes up for
this
With all the newly launched application stores, distributing and
making money with mobile applications is gradually becoming
more streamlined for the application developer.

Mobile game development requires jack-of-all-
trades abilities among the team members

Mobile game developers will

undoubtedly be called upon to
touch the various subsystems
of the game, and may find
themselves working on the
menu system, game ArtificiaI
Intelligence, game physics,
sound and more.
You get to own a bigger share of the overall
development.
You design the majority of the application yourself, rather
than manage a small part of as happens typically in desktop
application development.

What are the limitations of mobile game application development?

 There are more resource constraints as compared to a desktop

environment.
 Games need to be simple to learn and 'interruptible', as gamers
need to multi-task.
 The developer must consider such contingencies as the user's
personal safety and security, and the circumstances in which the
game may be played (on foot, in a vehicle, etc.).
Mobile game application development is for
developers who like challenges
