The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System
(AMS) is the industry’s leading element manager.
It is designed to deliver a complete management
solution for the Alcatel-Lucent Intelligent Services
Access Manager (ISAM) product family for both
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and fiber-based broad-
band access solutions. Built on a Java-based, state-
of-the-art management platform, the modular and
scalable Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS signals a new era
in access network management. It provides all the
management needs for configuration, maintenance
and troubleshooting operations through a highly
intuitive graphical interface that brings operator
usability to unprecedented levels. In addition, it
offers an exciting new set of productivity tools that
dramatically lower operating expenditures (OPEX),
quicken configuration time, and reduce service de-

driven by the requirement to reduce OPEX, while helping
you deliver the service quality your customers expect. This
has entailed bringing remote visibility into complex network
systems, as well as enabling quick problem location and
troubleshooting. However, with recent advances in technol-

a quickly evolving business environment that is driving pro-

Growing network complexity
Managing the access network has become a complex task.
Access network complexity has expanded due to an increasing
number of DSL flavors, as well as new fiber-based access
networks that can be deployed in a variety of new topologies.
These include fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), point-to-multipoint,
remote and subtended nodes. What’s more, access networks
have evolved to full IP and Ethernet technology and have

The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS supports the full Alcatel-
Lucent ISAM broadband access portfolio including DSL and
fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) products. This provides full cover-

optical network (PON)-based networks in an integrated
management solution, provides operational flexibility and

Enabling state-of-the-art,
flow-through management
Two options are made available to integrate
Alcatel-Lucent access networks into your OSS
ecosystem. The first solution is based on a TL1
gateway. This solution gives you full control of all
NE parameters. Further options are available based
on new Extensible Markup Language (XML)/Simple
Object Access Protocol (SOAP) interface products.
These provide a more stable interface that hides the
complexity of the technological details, enabling ease
of use as well as greatly reducing integration costs.
XML/SOAP-based interface products are targeted
at specific management domains, including fault
management, service provisioning and performance
management, letting you implement state-of-the-art
flow-through management solutions.

Works
Java-based and modular architecture
The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS is based on a new Java and widely modular client-server architecture. The
server software runs on a Solaris operating system, while the operator GUI consists of a rapid-download
client software, which can run on any standard PC. The application is built on a modular architecture
based on three different types of modules: AMS core management, NE management, and enhanced
application. The NE management module provides the software logic required to support specific
NE types and releases. As these modules are hot-pluggable, you can easily expand your Alcatel-Lucent
5520 AMS with the module that you need, and evolve your system to support new NE types or
releases without having to turn your management system off.

Rich functional coverage
The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS supports all functionalities
required to manage the wide array of broadband access
networks. It supports the full ISAM family, including central
office (CO), FTTN, fiber-to-the building (FTTB), fiber-to-
the-curb (FTTC) and fiber-to-the-unit (FTTU) deployment
versions, as well as the broadband functionality on the
Alcatel-Lucent 1540 Litespan Multiservice Access Node
(MSAN). As a result, the system provides integrated man-
agement of both DSL and PON-based access networks
bringing full freedom and flexibility to your organization.
Functionalities supported by the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS
cover all needs in the field of configuration, fault and per-
formance management. Further functions are provided with
the objective of simplifying and automating operators’ tasks,
including NE software management, equipment profiles and
template, user activity logging, NE configuration back-up/
restore, operations scheduling, and many more.

Intuitive and user-friendly graphical interface
The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS has been designed with a
user-friendly GUI. All commands are made available through
boxes, graphs or realistic equipment views. A tree-like
presentation enables a simplified and structured presentation
of the entire access network — no matter how complex. This
representation includes remote nodes and subtending archi-
tectures. All equipment shelves and racks are represented in
the GUI as they look physically. Furthermore, all management
events are reported to the operator in real time. This results in
lower OPEX owing to reduced training and a faster learning
curve for operators, as well as quicker and more appropriate
reactions to network events.

 State-of-the-art security
The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS makes the best use of the latest security enhance-
ments. RADIUS authentication allows you to grant access and control operator
sessions from your centralized authentication application. Unique operator
security credentials apply to a large set of applications, greatly simplifying your
security administration.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS also enables the restriction of operator management
rights to reflect their role, responsibility and skills. Management rights can be
limited to any given functional and geographical scope, up to the level of the NE,
and NE management communication has also been greatly improved with the
latest advancements brought by SNMPv3. This brings new encryption and
authentication mechanisms, greatly increasing management session security.

Scalability and availability

The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS system can run in a clustered system architecture.
Processing power can be added to a running system to increase processing needs
as your network grows. Available processing power is tapped from various serv-
ers by means of a load balancing mechanism. Load balancing also takes care of
possible server failures by smoothly redistributing processing among the available
clustered servers. The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS also provides increased availability
based on local hot stand-by redundancy. This allows recovery from server failure
in just a few minutes. To cope with your growing system availability concerns,
geographic redundancy is also available.
