Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah is one Islam’s greatest living jurists.

A pre-
eminent religious authority, he is considered a “scholars’ scholar” since many
of his students are actually considered ulama in their own right. Shaykh
Abdallah hails from the West African nation of Mauritania where he served as
Minister of Education, Minister of Justice and Vice President in the
Mauritanian government. Shaykh Bin Bayyah later went on to teach in Saudi
Arabia as a distinguished professor in usul al-fiqh (the principles of Islamic
jurisprudence).

The Shaykh is presently involved in several prominent organizations including

the Majma’ al-Fiqhi, a global council of scholars representing scholarship
from across the Muslim world and from all the different madhhabs and
viewpoints that aims to provide authoritative religious guidance on the issues
confronting Muslims today. Shaykh Abdallah has written several books and
has delivered lectures all over the world. His expertise spans a range of Islamic
disciplines and he is, in particular, a noted proponent of fiqh al-aqaliyat, a
specialised field of jurisprudence related to Muslims living as religious
minorities.
