TBA UPDATES

BHOMA PROJECT
Better
Health
Outcome through
Mentoring and
Assessment.
Overall Objective

To improve Primary Health care

1. By improving clinical care through use of guidelines.

2. To increase institutional deliveries

3. To reduce maternal mortality rate by 30-35%

4. To reduce under five mortality rate

5. Community involvement – expand the already existing community

based health services and improve quality of these services.
The BHOMA APPROACH
1. The clinical approach
◦ Clinic staff
◦ Clinic supporter

2. The Community approach

◦ Community Health Worker
◦ Neighbourhood health committee
◦ TBAs
Background
 District Health Offices and clinic staff felt there
were sufficient numbers of traditional birth
attendants (TBAs) in the community, but that
the TBAs were not appropriately referring
women to the clinic for delivery or
complications. They also noted that the TBAs
are not currently being supported with safe
delivery kits. As TBAs often receive payment in
kind from women whose deliveries they assist at
home, they may have a disincentive to routinely
refer women to the clinic for deliveries.
AIM
 increase referrals to the clinic for delivery,
◦ for emergency obstetric cases,
 increase home neonatal follow up by TBAs.
 offer a district-based training
 The training will review the goals of facility delivery and introduce a pregnancy
referral form for TBAs.
 We will also train the TBAs to follow up all pregnancies in the first month,
 to assess the condition of the infant and teach the mother which danger signs
should prompt her to bring the infant to the clinic.
 TBAs will complete infant follow up forms, for which they will receive a $1
incentive

 We will encourage the TBA to help the patient arrive at the clinic;
 for each pregnancy referral received at the clinic for delivery, the

TBA will receive a incentive.
