EXECUTIVE DECISION MAKING AT GENERAL MOTORS

SYNOPSIS

GENERRAL MOTORS is an automobile company comprises of different car manufacturing companies like
chervolet, Buick , Cardillac etc. The case study is about decision making process by organizing structure
previously and how they changed that structure from pure organizing structure to matrix organizing
structure to fulfill the demand of high fuel efficiency car. For that company CEO has formed automotive
strategic board for making decision. So by making this changes the company had regain its profitability
is explained in this case study.

What is your assessment of the ASB's decision making dynamics? Your assessment of Rick Wagnor's Role
in the process? What changes (if any) would you suggest?

In the ASB ‘s decision mechanics the decision was taken by senior management as well as involvement
of other members .ASB gives a lively and productive discussion. It is quick decision which may or may
not be in favor of the company.

Rick Wagnors role in this process is only listening the debate and after completion of whole debate he
reach to some decision.

The issues are given to each member before meeting and opinions of all the members are taken and if
the opinion differs from the general opinion then he/ she shoul get the chance to speak his/her thought
and then decision is taken.

How have GM's strategy, structure and decision making process evolved over time? How well aligned
were they in each of the three major eras?

As the strategy need to change for the company depending on the market scenario ,the structure and
decision making process is also changed over time.

Three major eras of the companies are concern with car manufacturing units so it should be step up by
them also.

What is your evaluation of the way that GM has chosen to design and operate its matrix? In particular,
what is your assessment of

- Giving budgetary and financial control to the regions?


- Doublehatting?
- The way PMP goals are set?
- The ASB's role?
- Rick Wagoner's role?

By doublehatting one man plays two roles in the company .
