General Virus Types

File Infector Boot Sector Macro

File Infector : A file-infector virus arrives

embedded or attached to a computer program
file — a file with an .EXE extension in its name.

Boot Sector Virus : This virus occupies the
memory in boot sector of hard disk or some
other storage device that the computer first
consults when it boots up. The boot sector
provides instructions that tell the computer how
to start up; the virus tells the computer (in
effect), While you’re at it, load me too — before
you do anything else.

Macro Virus : Macro Viruses hide themselves

inside the mini-programs present in the
documents like Word, Excel.

Infection strategies
In order to replicate itself, a virus must be
permitted to execute code and write to memory.
For this reason, many viruses attach themselves
to executable files that may be part of legitimate
programs.
Non-resident viruses : Consists of a finder
module and a replication module.
Resident viruses : Same modules, but
replication module is not called by the finder
module.

Origin of Viruses
People create viruses. A person has to write the
code, test it to make sure it spreads properly and
then release the virus. A person also designs the
virus’s attack phase, whether it’s a silly message
or destruction of a hard disk.

The first PC virus in the wild was a boot sector

virus dubbed (c)Brain, created in 1986 by the
Farooq Alvi Brothers in Lahore, Pakistan.

Prevention is the Best Cure
Run a secure operating system like UNIX or
Windows NT
Install Virus Protection Software
Avoid programs from unknown resources
Disable Floppy Disk and USB booting
Macro Virus Protection is enabled in all
Microsoft applications
Never open an attachment that
contains an executable that arrives
as an e-mail attachment

Origin of Antivirus
In 1991, Symantec released the first version of
Norton AntiVirus. Programs like Norton
AntiVirus are designed to find and eliminate
viruses from a computer, usually with three
goals in mind:
1. Make the virus stop doing harm to the
computer it has infected
2. Stop the spread of the virus
3. Limit any further harm the virus can do
