France on Strike
OCT 24, 2010 03:44P.M.

Weeks of strikes, protests and demonstrations have brought much of

France to a standstill as workers, students and others voice their strong
opposition to a government proposal to raise the age for a minimum
pension from 60 to 62. A quarter of the nation’s gas stations were out of
fuel, hundreds of flights were canceled, long lines formed at gas stations
and train services in many regions were cut in half. Protesters blockaded
Marseille’s airport, Lady Gaga canceled concerts in Paris and rioting
youths attacked police in Lyon. The unpopular bill is edging closer to
becoming law as the French Senate is preparing to vote on it today.

The reports come at a time of increased tension with China over disputed
islands and Beijing’s increased military activities in the region. The
Chinese navy has increasingly been deployed to areas near Japanese
territorial waters in a show of force by the rapidly developing Asian
giant.

Ties between Tokyo and Beijing were badly strained after Japan arrested
a Chinese trawler captain near a group of disputed islands in the East
China Sea six weeks ago, sparking a barrage of protests from Beijing. In a
tense incident in April this year, a large Chinese flotilla ventured near a
group of Japanese islands in the East China Sea and sent out a helicopter
that buzzed Japanese navy ships monitoring their movement.

ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION

In its search for lunar water, NASA launched an Atlas V rocket stacked
with an upper-stage rocket known as Centaur. Above it sat the Lunar Utility of industrial automation
Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, roughly the size of
a Volkswagen Beetle. Atop that sat another satellite, the Lunar robotics
Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO. OCT 22, 2010 10:47A.M.

The LRO went into moon orbit. Centaur eventually flew toward the
Cabeus crater, followed by a hurtling LCROSS. Drained of fuel, Centaur
was now the equivalent of an empty soda can 36 feet tall.

It slammed into the crater’s “fluffy, snow-covered dirt,” scientists said,

spewing at least 8,800 pounds of debris, dust and vapor. LCROSS’s
instruments took measurements on the quantity of water vapor and ice
in the plume, then smashed into the moon as well.

The LRO satellite, meanwhile, orbited 30 miles above the moon. Its main
task—which it continues to do today—was to create a three-dimensional
map of the moon’s surface, but it collected data on the impact plume as
well.

As the utility of industrial automation robotics has positively impacted

the cost of manufacturing, the size of products that are being

smaller and smaller electronic devices has had a great influence on the
size of industrial automation robotics that are used to produce them.
Some of the processes that industrial automation robotics are required to

There has also been a shift in the capabilities of other robot types.
SCARA robots were once the only robot used in the assembly electronic
products. Now with the speed increases that are capable of articulated
arm robotics these units can effectively be used in soldering and solar
cell construction. Articulated arm robots are easier to program and have
good flexibility for assembly.

than that!

Smaller manufacturers are reaping the benefits of the costs going down
for industrial automation robotics, while the capabilities go up. Return
on investment for robotics is realized in a short period of time. It is very
inexpensive to set up automation in a small manufacturing operation
when you compare the current cost of it with the cost of fixed or even
manual production of a few years ago.

WEAPON AND TECHNOLOGY Turns out the serial-number methodology was spot on. After the war,

against German tanks Here’s the math:

OCT 22, 2010 01:43A.M.
Suppose one is an Allied intelligence analyst during World War II, and
one has some serial numbers of captured German tanks. Further, assume
that the tanks are numbered sequentially from 1 to N. How does one
estimate the total number of tanks?

For point estimation (estimating a single value for the total), the
minimum-variance unbiased estimator (MVUE, or UMVU estimator) is
given by:

where m is the largest serial number observed (sample maximum) and k

is the number of tanks observed (sample size). Note that once a serial
number has been observed, it is no longer in the pool and will not be
observed again.

This has a variance of:

During World War II, Allied forces readily admitted German tanks were
superior to their own. The big question for Allied forces, then, was how
many tanks Germany was producing. Knowing that would help them
counter the threat. Here’s how they reverse-engineered serial numbers to
find out. Once they knew how many tanks the Germans were building, the Allies
knew how big a force was required to counter it. And that’s how Allied
To solve the problem of determining production numbers, Allied forces mathletes helped win the war.
initially tried conventional intelligence gathering: spying, intercepting
and decoding transmissions and interrogating captured enemies. This story was written by Ray Wert and originally published by Jalopnik
on Oct. 19.
Using these methods, the Allies deduced that the German military
industrial complex churned out around 1,400 tanks each month from
June 1940 through September 1942. That just didn’t seem right.

To put that number in context, Axis forces used 1,200 tanks during the
Battle of Stalingrad, an eight month battle that resulted in almost two
million casualties. That meant the estimate of 1,400 most likely was too
high.

Obviously skeptical of that result, the Allies looked for other methods of
estimation. That’s when they found a critical clue: serial numbers.

Allied intelligence noticed each captured tank had a unique serial

number. With careful observation, the Allies were able to determine the
serial numbers had a pattern denoting the order of tank production.
Using this data, the Allies created a mathematical model to determine
the rate of German tank production. They used it to estimate that the
Germans produced 255 tanks per month between the summer of 1940
and the fall of 1942.
