Prototyping is an important activity in engineering. Prototyping a design
helps in determining system parameters, ranges and in structuring

prototyping is crucial for improved functionality. Robotic systems are
diverse in their working principles, implementation and applications.
Furthermore, newly emerging technologies in the areas of computer
vision, wireless communication, micro and nanotechnologies have
enabled the emergence of robotic systems for new applications. Thus, we
perceive a need for an edited collection of chapters in the field of robotic
prototyping and its applications.

Prototyping of Robotic Systems: Applications of Design and

robotic systems and their applications, from complicated industrial
robots to state-of-the-art nanorobots for surgical applications, as well as
robotic systems for educational purposes. The new trends and most

SKILLS is the international conference of the SKILLS European Project

(IST, Multimodal Interfaces, 2007-2011). It addresses fundamental and
translational issues related to the acquisition, storage, maintenance and ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION
transfer of human skills using multimodal technologies such as virtual
and augmented realities, human-machine interfaces, interaction design, Applications to the Master’s in
and robotic systems. SKILLS aims at introducing a novel approach to
technology-assisted skill acquisition or rehabilitation based on enactive Robotics and Intelligent

In addition to keynote lectures, regular papers and posters, a large

portion of the conference will be devoted to the presentation of hands-on
demos illustrating the enactive approach to skill acquisition and transfer,
not limited to but including the three following domains: Sport &
Entertainement, Surgery & Rehabilitation, Industry & Manufacturing.
The two keynote speakers are J.A. Scott Kelso (Florida Atlantic
University, FL, USA) and Stefan Schaal (University of Southern
California, CA, USA).

The conference will be held at the CORUM International Convention

Center, December 15-16, 2011, in the beautiful city of Montpellier in the
