Broadway’s Beginnings

By: Rebecca Ferguson

“Give
My Regards
To Broadway”
Broadway symbolizes everything theatre, throughout

the world. It’s the icon that represents all things in musical

theatre. Broadway is the well known street that has become

recognized as the capital of theatre world wide. The Theatre

district is actually about eleven blocks long and not all theatres

are on just one street. It starts on West 41st Street where the

Netherland theatre is and goes up too West 53rd Street where

the Broadway theatre is.

Only four theatres are actually on the street name

Broadway. The only four theatres that are on Broadway is the

Marquis at 46th street, the Palace at 47th street, the Winter

Garden at 50th and the Broadway at 53rd street.

My experience on Broadway has been a life changing, it

has caused me to get a career in theatre. There’s nothing more magi-

cal then stepping into an open theatre, seeing the empty audience

seats, the stage waiting for the actors and you for the performance.

When you go see a show do not expect it to be just like the movie. You

are not able to put everything on stage like a movie set. Thats where

your imagination comes in. When the lights go down, and the first

opening song begins you can visual everything that’s missing from

the stage .The theatre I went to was the Nederlander theatre. This is

the theatre where RENT was only played. The Nederlander theatre is

considered off Broadway because its not on one of the blocks in the

theatre district.
