Population: 255 (July 2009 estimates, Population Research Center at

The town, named for its proximity to Elk Creek, is located approximate-
ly 27 miles west of Sutherlin on Highway 138. One of the earliest areas in
Douglas County to be settled by Europeans, it is the site of one of several
Hudson’s Bay Co. fur trading establishments called Fort Umpqua. A sign
posted on the west side of the highway features a composite of the post
sketched in 1841 by Lt. George Simmons of the U.S. South Seas and Sur-
veying Expedition. The town was named in 1850, and today features a
general store and several restaurants including Arlene’s, which is famous
for its logger burgers, and Tomaselli’s Pastry Mill and Cafe, known for its
bakery items.
One of the city’s crown jewels is the Elkton Community Education
Center, which features a small amphitheater, a butterfly pavilion that
attracts migratory butterflies and a garden with native Oregon plants.

Located in the Cow Creek Valley and rough-

for the abundance of azaleas that grow there.
In 1912 Thomas Towns built the Azalea Gen-

established, and in 1932 the Grange Hall was
built near Quines Creek. Several historic struc-

the Gilham School, were lost in the 1964
