Dynamic shear plugging of beams and plates with an advancing crack

By Teng and Weirzbicki

International J. of Impact Eng.

Remarks

 Analytical study of perforation of thin beams and plates.

 Two stage shear plugging model is proposed:- i) indentation ii) crack growth
 A coupled shear-tension solution that takes into account global deformation is also
developed.
 The shear-tension solution gives improved prediction of initial impact velocity near
ballistic limit.
 Shear resistance in the ligament decreases as the crack propagate through the target
thickness.

Higher order impact modelling of sandwich structures with flexible

cores
By Yang and Qiao

International J. of Solids and Structures

Remarks

 Higher order impact model is presented to simulate the response of a soft core
sandwich beam subjected to a foreign object impact.
 Free vibration problem of sandwich beam is first solved then a foreign object
impact process is incorporated in the model.
 Effect of projectile mass, initial impact velocity and core height and core
thickness are discussed.
 Parametric study of various factors on impact process shows that the effect of
mass and initial velocity over the transient impact response of sandwich beam are
close to those of linear impact solution.
 The present model is capable of capturing the non-linear impact process.
Deformation and tearing of clamped work-hardening beams subjected
to impulsive loading
By Wen

International J. of Impact Eng.

Remarks

 A theoretical analysis based on power law stress-strain relationship throughout is

presented.
 Behaviour of clamped beams subjected to uniformly distributed impact loads is
examined.
 Rupture of beams under impulsive loading is predicted by effective shear failure
criterion which takes into consideration the influence of transverse shear on axial
tensile strain.

A computational model of viscoplasticity and ductile damage for impact

and penetration
By Borvik et al.

European J. of Mech. A/Solids

Remarks

 This paper describes a coupled computational model of viscoplasticity and

damage capable of predicting deformation and fracture in ductile materials during
penetration and impact.
 Material tests for Weldox-460E steel and calibration procedure are presented and
discussed.

A further study of plastic shear failure of impulsively loaded clamped

beams
By Yu and Chen

International J. of Impact Eng.

Remarks

 This paper examines the plastic shear failure of impulsively loaded clamped
beams
 Focus is on i) interaction between shear force and bending moment ii)
weakening of sliding sections during the failing process.
 Dimensional analysis is performed to obtain a general form of threshold
impulsive velocity.
 Elementary failure criterion is modified to incorporate the effect of sliding
sections weakening effect.
 By adopting the interactive yield conditions such as circular yield curve the
present study provide more reasonable and better predictions.

Low velocity impact response of sandwich beams with functionally

graded core
By Apetre, Sankar, Ambur

International J. of Impact Eng.

Remarks

 Low speed impact of a one dimensional sandwich panel by a rigid cylindrical

projectile is considered here.
 The problem is a combination of static contact and dynamic response problem
 Contact problem is solved using assumed contact stress distribution method
 Impact problem is modelled as a combination of two springs- linear spring to
account for global deformation and non- linear spring to represent local
indentation effects.
 Results indicate that contact stiffness of graded increases causing contact
stresses and other stress components in the vicinity of contact to increase
 Values of maximum strains corresponding to the maximum impact load are
reduced considerably due to grading of the core properties.

Numerical simulation of impact loaded steel beams and the failure

criteria
By Yu and Jones

International J. of Solids and Structures

Remarks

 Impact loading of clamped mild steel beams are simulated numerically using
finite element code ABAQUS with plane stress elements.
 Effect of flexural wave propagation, influence of material strain rate sensitivity
and inertia effects on structural response are presented.
 Stress wave effect is important in early stage of response for beams even though
maximum impact velocity is 8 m/s only
 Stress also increases in the dynamic cases for materials having a strain rate
hardening effect.

The structural response of clamped sandwich beams subjected to

impact loading
By Wang et al.

Composite Structures

Remarks

 Structural response of dynamically loaded clamped monolithic and sandwich

beams made of Al skins and different cores is studied here.
 The core materials were Al honeycomb cores and closed cell Al foam.
 A foam projectile was used- Alporas foam.
 Laser displacement transducer was used for measurement of permanent
deformation of back face midpoint of beam.
 The beam with honeycomb core presented mainly large global deformation.
 Foam core beams tend to local deformation and failure.

Transition of failure modes in round nosed mass to beam impact

By Teng and Weirzbicki

European j. of Mech. A/Solids

Remarks

 Deformation and failure response of a long metal beam impacted by a rigid

projectile is investigated
 Focus is laid on transition of failure modes from tensile dominated mechanism to
shear dominated mechanism with increasing impact velocities.
 Two metals are used Weldox 460E and 2024-T351 Al alloy representing a more
and a less ductile material.
 Tensile tearing is favourable mode of failure for both metal at velocities near
ballistic limit.
 Energy dissipated increases with impact velocity, reaches a maximum at ballistic
limit and then suddenly decreses.
