THE GIANT KODIAK BEAR

YR. 3W BY:KAIDI McFIELD JACKSON

WHY I CHOSE GIANT KODIAK BEARS

Because I love bears and because the bears are cuddly and
beautiful. They are the only one of their kind and they are
also the largest bears in world. A male bear, also called a boar ,
can stand up to 10 feet tall. The female bears, called a sow, are
a little smaller than the boars.
The Kodiak Bears
Habitats and Needs
There are about 3,500 Kodiak bears
living on Kodiak Islands. The
islands are considered high-quality
bear habitat, they have plenty of
food, water, cover, and space. On
Kodiak Islands the bears have lots
of food such as fish, called salmon,
berries, grass, and plants. The
bears Habitat provides thickets
which they use as cover to hide
from people, weather, and to sleep.
They also use the spruce trees or
steep and rocky areas.
Changes to the Habitats of the Kodiak Bears
The Kodiak islands are thought to be the best bear habitat in the world. The habitat
inland is undamaged with a small population of humans living closer to the sea.
The roads lead only to the villages. There was only one disruption of inland habitat,
when a hydroelectric project was built, but it was completed with very little contact
with the bears or their habitat. Wildfire, which was caused by humans, has burned
about 1,135 acres of habitat annually over the past 10 years. No investigation has
been done to find out how the fires have affected the bears. But in short the
researchers have said Kodiak bears are adaptable, and with a healthy habitat and
human neighbors who are understanding and educated, they will prosper.
We can help the bears by keeping the present bear
habitat on the Kodiak Islands the way it is now and
by:
1. protecting their water supply,
2. not polluting
3. protecting salmon population
4. protecting trees , thickets, rocky areas
5. Limit our visits to their habitats so that we learn to
live together happily
6. Educate campers on how to build safe camp fires
7. Educate visitors about the bears
