The first instance of C.S.R. was observed in U.S. in the
late 1800’s.A socialist, Adam Brown, initiates the C.S.R.process. After which companies across U.S. took social and cultural activites.
1950’s- Modern era of CSR began.
Mr.H.R.Bowen wrote the book, “Social Responsibility of A Businessman”.After the launch of this book, CSR came into the Limelight.He is known as The Father of CSR. 1960’s to 1970’s- During this period, the definition of CSR was further expanded.Keith Davis and C.Walton said, Social Responsibility must commensurate with social power.
C.Walton, brought the concept of volunteerism in
CSR. 1970’s to 1980’s- The Committee for Economic Development (C.E.D), brought in 3 tier model for CSR:
Inner Circle – includes obligation of business towards Profit and growth.
Intermediately Circle – Dealt with sensitivity of business to changing social contracts between business and society.
Greater Circle – Involved obligation of business for improvements in the social environment. 1980’s to 1990’s – During this era, corporate giants felt that there were attempts to “Regulate Them”.
Result: A back lash. Corporates meddled in The Earth
Summit in 1992.
Created obstacles in finding solutions for environment
protection. In 1995 – Shell was claimed to be involved in the execution of ‘Ken Saro Wiwa’ in Nigeria.
