WHAT IS CSR?
CSR
 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is
seriously considering the impact of a
company’s action on society.
 It requires the company to consider its acts
in terms of a whole social system and is held
responsible for the effects of its acts
anywhere in that system.
Arguments for CSR

The rise of large corporations has created social problems and


they should be responsible for solving these problems
-- Long-range self-interest view – if a company wants a healthy
future, it has to create the climate
-- To ward off future government intervention and regulation
“Business has resources” and “Let business try”

CSR activities in INDIAN OIL

• The Corporation’s objectives in this key


performance area are enshrined in its Mission
statement: "…to help enrich the quality of life
of the community and preserve ecological
balance and heritage through a strong
environment conscience."
Indian oil have touched lives of millions of people
positively by supporting ---------
• Environmental projects
• Health care projects
• Social programmes
• Cultural programmes &
• Educational programmes.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

• Invested close to Rs. 7000 crore in state-of-art


technology refineries at its refineries for production
of green fuels meeting global standards.
• It is committed to the Global Compact Programme
of the United Nations and endeavors to abide by the
10 principles of the programme , some of which are
already part of the corporate’s Vision and Mission
statements.
• All Indian refineries have
environmental management
systems certified to ISO-14001.
• Re-use of treated effluent is
extensively practiced .
• Indian oil is the only petroleum
company in India with ISO accredition for
over 60 of its units.
HEALTH CARE PROJECTS
• There are many Divisional level and
Occupational Health Centres set up
at its refineries.
• All Indian Oil refineries are certified under Occupational
Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)/OHSAS-
18001) by M/s. DNV, The Netherlands.
• Safety systems are audited under
International Safety Rating System (ISRS).
• Indian Oil's Gujarat Refinery has achieved Level-8 (out
of 10) of ISRS, the highest level earned by any
Indian refinery.

SOCIAL PROGRAMMES

• About one-fourth of the community


development funds are spent on the
welfare of Scheduled Caste and
Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries.
• Providing potable water, sanitation,
and empowerment of women and
other marginalised groups.

• Indian Oil has always been in the forefront in times of


national emergencies. Indian Oil People have time and
again rallied to help victims of natural calamities,
maintaining uninterrupted supply of petroleum
products and contributing to relief and rehabilitation
measures in cash and kind.
• Indian Oil's community-focused initiatives include
allotment of petrol/diesel station dealerships and LPG
distributorships to beneficiaries from among
Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, physically
handicapped, ex-servicemen, war widows, etc.

• The Corporation has also unveiled Kisan
Seva Kendra's as small-format retail
outlets to reach quality products and
services to people in the rural areas.
• Indian Oil has also set up the Indian Oil\
Foundation (IOF) as a non-profit trust to
protect, preserve and promote national
heritage monuments.
CULTURAL PROGRAMMES

• The objective of this scheme is to award


Indian Oil Sports Scholarships to promising
young players with a view to encourage
talent and create a pool of sportspersons.
• Organising programmes on its own under
the banners of Indian Oil Art Exhibition,
Indian Oil Sangeet Sabha and
Indian Oil Kavi Sammelan. 
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
• Indian oil awards 450 Scholarships for meritorious
students all over India, under the Indian Oil
Scholarships Scheme for each academic year.
• The scholarship scheme covers the first year students
of 10+ / ITI, Engineering, MBBS and MBA, have been
formally announced through newspaper
advertisements inviting applications under the Indian
Oil Scholarships Scheme.
• Special encouragement is being given to girl students,
physically challenged students, and students from
J & K as well as the Northeast States.

 Policy for Activities under Corporate Social


Responsibility

(a) Expenditure not exceeding 2% of the Retained Profit


of the previous year can be incurred towards corporate
social responsibility every year.(This is against the
ceiling of 0.75% of Net Profit, which was in force
hitherto).The above amount is inclusive of the annual
contribution of Rs.10.00 crores towards Indian Oil
Foundation.

(b) The donations/contributions and CD activities should be focused


in specific target areas to establish a corporate culture on the subject.
As such, after paying/allocating the annual contribution towards
Indian Oil Foundation, the remaining amount would be utilized as
per the following break-up:
•A minimum of 35% towards national causes/natural calamities.
•Amount not exceeding 5% towards donations/contributions.
•30% towards Community Development activities including Special
Component Plan and Tribal Sub Plan.
•20% towards IOC’s scholarship, of which 50% amount would be
utilized towards providing scholarships to the students
belonging to weaker sections of society and 50%
amount for others.
•10% towards “other” activities.

(c) While utilizing the Community Development Funds,


more emphasis should be laid on the projects of providing
Clean Drinking Water, Health & Medical Care and
Education as under to the extent possible:
• 40% towards Clean Drinking Water
• 40% towards Health & Medical Care
• 20% towards Education
Conclusion
Indian oil CSR activities is not……..
”doing only for the sake of it”.
The company still trying to come up
forward and realise their hidden
responsibilities and further putting a
step forward towards it.
