GAMATRONIC GAMATRONIC CASE STUDIES Ministry of Justice Adopts GY C&M Unit to Monitor 2Y Data Centers in DA Offices Across the Country “As soon as the Gé unit went online, the availability of our systems skyrocketed, One screen gives us a picture of everything that’s going on at all our data centers in the country.” Yossi Yatzkan, Manager of Infrastructure Projects, September 2006 Pe Meuest The Customer 24 data centers of the Israel Ministry of Justice, operated in DA offices across the country The Challenge Monitor all data centers from central location in Jerusalem The Solution The Gamatronic G4 C&M unit Key Benefits ) Round-the-clock monitoring of all IT equipment and data center environment ) Alerts sent to phone or network system ) Early warning of deviations from normal operation that can lead to error ) Web-based user interface > Central control of all data centers from a single location erEi saben ae The Israel Ministry of Justice operates 24 data centers across the country, from the Negev in the South to the Galilee in the north. Each data center supports the operation of district attorneys, public defenders, and other Ministry officials. Typically, data centers house between 5 to 10 servers, a UPS system, air conditioning equipment, fire extinguishing equipment. All data centers are tied into a national network controlled from a hub in Jerusalem: THE CHALLENGE Israeli government agencies are highly computerized, ‘The 24 data centers operated by Ministry of Justice host all Ministry data, and are tied into a parallel system operated by the courts. They are available around the clock, 7 days a week. Before the G4 C&M unit was installed, the data centers were exposed to a range of possible failures of the multiple systems in place. If servers crashed in the afternoon, the network was down until the system administrator arrived the following morning, If an air conditioning system cut out in the middle of the weekend or did not coo! to the required temperature, the entire facility was at risk, There was no warning for impending disaster and failures were detected and addressed only when the systems went down and an employee was at hand to respond to an emergency. The key objectives of Ministry of Justice were: ) Provide a single solution that monitors the well- being of all the servers, of the UPS (the Ministry deploys UPS systems from 4 different manufacturers), and of the data center environment » Forestall system failures by early detection of possible problems before they reach a critical stage, to reduce downtime and maintenance costs ) Receive real-time messages of errors, server failures, and disruptive environmental changes in the data center ) Monitor activity at all 24 data centers around the clock from a central location in Jerusalem ) Take preventive and corrective action remotely in case of system failure or systems operating outside specified ranges GAMATRONIC CASE STUDIES iia ‘The Ministry of Justice decided to install a G4 Management and Control system in each data center to monitor server activity and environmental conditions. Each G4 system was set up to monitor the well- being of the servers in place, 1 UPS system, 2 temperature sensors, 2 flood sensors, and 2 A/C connectivity sensors. Greer ie ‘The G4 unit contains a built-in web server that enables administrators to query and control it remotely from an Internet browser. Administrators access the G4 over the Internet through its unique IP address, can configure the unit, read the status of all the monitored devices, and service alarms by shutting down servers and UPS systems as needed. GAMATRONIC ELEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The Gamatronic Element Management System (GeMSi) ties together all 24 G4 units and enables Ministry personnel to manage and control all the data centers from a central facility in Jerusalem. GeMSi provides access to the web interface of each G4 unit. GeMSi uses a hierarchical structure that provides a global view of all the units on a general ‘map on which each unit is represented by an icon showing the level of the most severe alarm. From this general map administrators can drill down to regions, data centers, and individual units. GeMSi provides at-a-glance view of the entire nationwide system, and allows global management of all the units. At the same time, administrators can access each unit individually for configuration, monitoring, and control purposes. Says Yossi Yatzkan, SYSTEM PERFORMANCE Deployment of the C&M system at the Ministry of Justice began gradually. In the first stage, the G4 units were installed in the 24 data centers and monitoring was set up for IT equipment, UPS system, and 2 few environmental parameters. Next, operational ranges were configured and control functions such as shut down were activated. “The system has virtually endless capabilities,” says Yatzkan, “and it will continue to grow as we expand the features and functionality of our own equipment. For example, when we install air conditioning units equipped with dry contacts, we will be able to use the Gamatronic C&M system to monitor temperature Manager of Infrastructure projects who was instrumental in deploying the system at the Ministry of Justice: "The administrator responsible for data center operation can supervise the data centers across the country from our central facility here. Summary data from all G4 units in the country is displayed on one large screen,” In our data centers and switch on and off A/C units as temperatures exceed the upper and lower limits we have set.” ‘The system is also intended to prevent failures by providing early warning of possible trouble. The sophisticated C&M software can detect changes in ‘common patterns and issue alarms when deviations exceed a set percentage. “The system has already saved us downtime,” says Yatzkan, “and we expect it to be a major player in preventing maintenance problems and ensuring a smooth workflow.” GAMATRONIC ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES LTD.
