Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Uses Gamatronic C&M
System to Monitor Communication Stations
‘The IDF adopted the Gamatronic C&M system over 5 years ago to monitor the power supplies for its
large number of communication stations across the country, operating within the stringent security
constraints of the IDF. Despite numerous upgrades of the communication centers in the intervening years,
the Gamatronic system continues to serve as specified at installation.

The Challenge
Monitor the communication stations from several central locations, supporting the IDF's

The Solution
‘The Gamatronic GMACI CMS unit with customized GeMSi software
Key Benefits
) Round-the-clock monitoring of the power equipment
) Central control of communication stations from a several locations using a client-server
architecture that complies with IDF security requirements
) Early warning of deviations from normal operation that can lead to error
) Compliance with military specifications
) Web-based user Interface

‘The communication needs of the IDF are critical and require absolute protection against failure and tampering.
‘The power supplies that ensure the uninterrupted operation of the communication stations are part of this
array. The communication that takes place between the stations and the central facility monitoring their
functioning and integrity is subject to the IDF's high security requirements.

‘The IDF operates a large number of communication
stations across the country, used to transmit both
classified and unclassified information. At each station,
2-4 Gamatronic DC power supplies provide power
to the various communication devices.
‘The stations are tied into a nationwide network and
managed from several central locations.
‘Administrators are organized into a hierarchy of local,
regional, and national centers. Regional control
centers are authorized to view and access stations
within their region, but not outside of it, The IDF
required that the control and monitoring solution be
implemented with a client-server architecture that
supports a hierarchical authorization scheme. The
IDF also required special user interfaces for
technicians, administrators, and several levels of
managers, where each interface makes available to
users only the functions they are entitled to access.
The key objectives of the IDF were
) Provide continuous monitoring of the power
systems at the communication stations from
several central locations to different classes of
users
} Implement the solution using a client-server
architecture that complies with the IDF’s security
requirements and makes available to users only
the centers and functions they are authorized to
access
) Ensure that the monitoring equipment complies
with military specifications
) Forestall system failures by early detection of
possible problems before they reach a critical
stage, to eliminate downtime and reduce
maintenance costs

The IDF decided to install Gamatronic’s MCS solution
based on the GMACi card and the GeMSi software.
The internal GMACI card was configured to track the
well-being of all the components of the power system,
including the power supply, transformer, and batteries.

The GMACi card installs in the power system. It
provides real-time monitoring of the system and
information about its general alarm status. If it
detects a fault, it issues notifications to specified
recipients. GMACi enables remote management of
the system through a variety of software applications,
including Gamatronic’s GeMSi
GMaCi can operate through a variety of parallel
connections, protocols, and applications at the same
time, It is compatible with all Gamatronic power
supplies as well as with the products of other
manufacturers.
GMACI provides @ comprehensive report about the
state of each component: power supply, batteries,
transformer. At the IDF communication center, the
GMACI cards were configured to monitor over 1,100
power system parameters and feed them into GeMSi,
Gamatronic’s management software, as well as into
the IDF’s proprietary management software. In case
of any type of failure, both management programs
use complex logic to produce a diagnosis by analyzing
the rich data obtained from the GMACI card.
GAMATRONIC ELEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The Gamatronic Element Management System
(GeMSi) ties together all the GMACi cards and enables,
IDF personnel to manage and control the
communication stations from several central facilities,
GeMSi enables user access to the information
transmitted by the GMACI cards, GeMSi uses a
hierarchical structure that provides a global view of
all the units on a general map on which each unit is
represented by an icon showing the level of the most
severe alarm, From this general map operators can
rill down to regional and local stations and to
individual power units that they are authorized to
GeMSi provides at-a-glance view of the network and
enables global management of units at all the
communication stations. Operators can access each
unit individually for configuration, monitoring, and
control purposes, At the same time, the system
