Effective Praise- Praise should be used when the student

consistently does something well (this should not be taken for

granted – look for opportunities to praise), when a student shows
improvement in a problem area, or when the student positively
attempts a new skill. The steps are as follows:
1. Show your approval (Use eye contact with student, move to the
area where the student is sitting/standing, use words like –
‘Wow’, ‘Great’, ‘Fantastic’, etc.
2. Describe the positive (Be Specific about what you liked, ie
rather than “you are doing a good job” say “You are sitting at
your desk, facing forward, and quietly reading your book”).
3. Give a reason. The reason should be a kid-related reason.
The following is an example of Effective Praise:
Show your approval.
“Wow, Susie, that’s awesome!”
Describe the positive behavior.
“When you needed help with your work, you raised your hand and
waited for the teacher to call on you”.
Give a reason.
“When you raise your hand, the teacher is more likely to give you
the positive help and attention that you need to get your work
done.”
