Kindergarten Health Education: The Five Senses

Objective:

TEKS 115.2. Health information. The student knows the basic structures and functions
of the human body and how they relate to personal health. The student is expected to:

1) name the five senses

Materials:

 Several pieces of fabric

 Water
 Blindfolds
 Samples of food (skittles, apples, bananas, etc.)
 Plates
 Canisters
 Objects for the children to smell (rubbing alcohol, perfume, peppermints, etc.)
 Tempura Paint
 Paper
 Little Instruments for children (shakers, drums, triangles, etc.)

Procedure:

1) Review on what students already know about their five senses.

a) Ask students what they use to see with. Have all students point to their
eyes after question has been asked. Continue with hearing, touching,
tasting and smelling.
b) Explain that their eyes, ears, fingers, mouth and nose are all part of their
five senses.
2) Use hand’s on activities so students better understand their five senses and
how they are used in everyday life.
a) Sense of Touch: Distribute several pieces of fabric (wet and dry)to the
students. Have the students touch several pieces of fabric and determine
if they are wet or dry.
b) Sense of Taste: Have several plates of sample foods for the students to
taste. Blindfold each student and pass out a sample food. Ask a student to
describe what the food tastes like then make a guess on what it is.
Continue with all sample foods and then explain what taste buds are.
c) Sense of Smell: Put objects in canisters for the students to smell. The
students will smell through a hole in the top of the canisters. Have the
students describe what they smell and then make a guess.
d) Sense of Sight: Have the students mix paints on pieces of paper. After
they are done, they can make artwork.
e) Sense of Sound: Bring instruments for the students to play to produce
different sounds. Turn on music and record the students playing their
instruments along with the music. Let the children listen to their
recording.
3) Guided Practice
a) Teach the students the “Five Senses” song for retention and practice.
(See attached lyrics). Have the students echo each line before practicing
the whole song from the beginning. Have the student point to each body
part that corresponds to one of the five senses.

Assessment:

Distribute the Five Senses Worksheets for students to complete. The worksheet
requires the student to match each of the five senses to a body part. Explain the
worksheet with the students.

The Five Senses Song
