First Grade ESL Reading/Vocabulary Development

Objective:
The student will correctly define vocabulary words, notice rhyming and non-rhyming
words, and identify adjectives with their opposites 90% of the time.

TEKS 2.1 Reading, beginning reading skills, and phonological awareness. Students display
phonological awareness. The student is expected to:
(D) Distinguish orally presented rhyming pairs of words from non-rhyming pairs.
TEKS 6.1 Reading and vocabulary development. Students understand new vocabulary and use
it when reading and writing. Students are expected to:
(D) Identify and sort words into conceptual categories (e.g., opposites, living things).

Materials:
 Chalkboard
 Vocabulary Cards
 Definition Cards
 Magical Mystery Tour CD
 Lyrics to “Hello Goodbye” with blanks
 Vocabulary Words and Opposite Adjectives Worksheet

Procedure:
1. Review what students already know about spelling and vocabulary.
a. Have each student write on the chalkboard a word from last lesson’s
vocabulary/spelling list. [Yes, no, and, why, say, came, pretty, ride, white,
this, and all]
b. Divide the students into two teams. The teams will be determined by
which number they were given when the teacher counted off (1 or 2).
Give half of the vocabulary and definition cards to team one. The last half
of the vocabulary and definition cards should be given to team two. Have
the students match the vocabulary cards to the correct definition cards.
Repetition of this activity is key to the student’s retention of the
material.
2. Introduce new vocabulary words and adjectives. [When, take, stop, go, thank,
could, goodbye, hello, high, low, and know]
a. Play “Hello Goodbye” by The Beatles. Ask the children to only listen for
the new vocabulary words.
3. Guided Practice
a. Provide the lyrics with blanks for the students to fill in the vocabulary
words. Play “Hello Goodbye” a second time. Encourage the children to
sing along as they fill in the blanks with the words. Walk around and
provide assistance to those students struggling.
b. Go over the correct answers. Discuss the frequent use of opposite
adjectives. [Stop and go, yes and no] Although this song has no specific
rhyme scheme, distinguish the points of the song at which words do
rhyme. [For example: You say high, I say low, you say why, and I say I
don’t know]

Assessment:
1. Distribute the Vocabulary Words and Opposite Adjectives Worksheet to each
student for completion. The first half of the worksheet contains definitions with
blanks for the students to fill in the correct vocabulary word to which it belongs.
The second half of the worksheet lists adjectives on one side and their opposites
on the other. They are not in order. The students will match the adjectives to
their opposite.
