Identification of the Subject

Nervey Santos.

II. Information Sources

Sources were directly taken from the school he’s in recently. His teachers were also the
direct informant but parents no where to be found.

III. Background Information

Not a typical boy of his age, Nervey was born November 22, 2000. He is recently in San
Mateo Rizal. The boy was borned with a congenital disorder that debilitates his capacity to
hear on both ears. This loss of hearing somehow has led to language problem and learning
difficulties both now and on his later growing years. His mother, Novavilla Santos has long
been separated with his father, Gerardo Santos. Now both of his parents have their own
family so Nervey was left to the care of his grandmother.

His congenital disorder, according to his grandmother, was because his mother has taken
too many drugs while on the early stage of pregnancy with Nervey. Drugs taken were not
identified but they were mixture of antibiotics, anticolds and the like because Mrs. Novavilla
was sickly during the entire duration of her pregnancy. And because they were too poor to
afford a medical expert to assess her condition, the drugs taken were either suggested or
self medicated.

At first they thought Nervey’s a normal baby but as he grows, they found out that he has no
response with sounds around him. Even a loud clap or shout wouldn’t startled him. They
started noticing the boy to have had frequent ear infection. The infection was treated
lightly or treated with the use of self medicated drugs as suggested not by medical experts
but by the people /neighborhood who have no idea that it could lead to a greater problem
for the boy. Nervey was denied by the treatment that he was supposed to have taken
because of his prevailing condition. His family lives on a hand to mouth existence that a visit
to a doctor or an ear specialist that will correctly diagnosed Nervey and give him correct
medicines have never been an option for his grandmother due to financial constraints.
But an early intervention with therapeutic measures is crucial to protect and improve
Nervey’s auditory function. A more serious condition could have been prevented or
perhaps treated if this is done. But the economic state of the family and the lack of a
sufficient education information of Nervey’s condition both to the parents and the
grandmother denied Nervey this chance.

The severity of Nervey’s hearing loss has not been measured by medical specialist so that to
say his condition is mild, moderate or severe is purely assumptions.
Recently, Nervey is in the 2nd grade at BATINO, a special education institution subsidized by
the government where indigent students are being taught and were given a curriculum
suited to their needs. In Nervey’s case, since he is hearing impaired, the materials and
methods of teaching being used to him is in accordance to his learning skills, his ability (and
inability) to grasp information.

Though Nervey cannot hear on both ears but his visual skills shows positive output. Any oral
instructions should be aided with visual aids for him to process it quickly. Somehow, Nevery
struggles with simple instruction therefore He can communicate with adults only if the adult
has been with him for a longer period and has memorized/learned his ways of
communication. His grandmother who lives with him can understand h im with little
difficulty. With peers, he uses gestures to communicate especially during playtime.

His way to converse is through Total Communication which is a communication of formal

signs, informal gestures, finger-spelling, facial expression, body language and limited spoken
words.

IV. General Appraisal/Recommendation/Prediction

The child need more than to be in SPED school. He needs medical intervention that could
assess his condition well. An Auditory-Verbal Therapy is suggested for him to have a more
expressive oral language. There is a need to enhance social skills with peers, learn more
expressive and receptive language skill ( speaking and listening )
