Measure I Defeat is a Mandate for Real Fiscal Reform

Opponents call for leaders to work on a Better Plan for Long Beach.

November 4, 2008—Long Beach, CA---Opponents of Measure I were

elated Tuesday night as they found that Measure I would come far short
of the 2/3 vote required to pass.

“We were outspent over 60 to 1, and it just shows that this city can’t be
bought from outside, and that voters are hungry for fiscal discipline,” said
Randy Terrell, consultant for the No on Measure I campaign, and

Opponents of Measure I worked for the past two months to counter the
juggernaut established by Mayor Foster. They worked to get equal time
at events, walked thousands of pieces of literature door to door, and set
up hundreds of yard signs in an effort to counter the Mayor.

“Now the hard work begins on an alternative infrastructure plan, a better

plan for Long Beach that is more cost effective and can be accepted by
residents and businesses,” said Terrell. “I just hope the Mayor can
extend his circle to include more than just politicians and City Hall
insiders.”

In addition to working to defeat Measure I, opponents have been pushing

a dialogue on an alternative plan for the past several months, detailed at
www.ABetterPlanForLongBeach.com. They plan on approaching groups
like the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Apartment
Association—two groups that were kept out of Measure I plans this
year—to help work on an alternative proposal.
