Read the letter to the “Dear Thelma’ column of The Star and Telma’s reply. Answer the following
the questions that follow.

Dear Thelma,
I am a working mother with a discipline problem. I need help with my seven-year-old son’s
behaviour. He was looked after by numerous babysitters before he turned five years old. It was
not until the birth of his sister that he finally settled down permanently under the care of my
mother.
He used to be such a well-mannered and quiet child. He received lots of praise from many
people who compared him to their children. Things started to change when he turned four. We
left him under the care of a babysitter who also had an older boy who was in Standard Six. Both
children used to do a lot of play-fighting. Since then, his behaviour has worsened. He became
uncooperative and refused to obey us.
During his two years in kindergarten, he played with the children who were aggressive.
When I approached his teacher for help with discipline, she brushed it off by saying that children if
his age are like that.
At present, he is in Standard One. His class teacher complained to me that he used to kick
his classmates and twist their fingers. Once he was caught throwing a stone at his friend. I was
shocked and angry. After discussing the matter with my husband, we had a talk with our son. He
claimed that it was his friends who started the fight. He was hit and kicked. He retaliated.
At home, when he fights with his sister, his sister always puts the blame on him. He either
cries and denies it or he will just keep quiet. There were times when we wrongly accused him of
beating his sister because he did not speak up to protect himself. I have difficulty getting him ti
settle down to do his homework. My husband had to use physical punishment to make him to his
homework.
Since he was one-year olf, I have trained my son to be independent. When he did anything
wrong, I would cane him and confine him in a dark room. Friends advised me to stop such
punishment. My husband and I are at our wits end. We have exhausted all ideas of how to
discipline our son. Please help.

Stressed-out Parent, Kuala Lumpur.

THE first five years of life are most critical to a child’s emotional development. Before the age
of one, the child learns to establish trust with his childminder. Frequent change of childminders in
the first year can cause the child to develop insecure behaviour.
Underneath all the negative behaviour that your son is exhibiting is a low self-esteem. He
has been living in a atmosphere of excessive strictness. When children have developed low self-
esteem, it is necessary to provide reconstructive experiences. First, as his parents, you must
learn to accept him for what he is. Do not compare him with anyone. Changing low self-esteem
requires intense focusing on the child’s attributes. You have to bring out his strengths and
accomplishments. Everyone has his or her good points. Practise looking at your son in a positive
light.
Children feel worthwhile when they are loved within a secure, clearly defined context. They
thrive on trust and encouragement. When he fights with his sister, do not interfere unless it is life-
threatening. Stay out of your children’s fight. When there is no audience, the fights will not longer
be is not effective. Both children are at fault once they get into a fight. Be consistent in your
discipline of both children.
Sibling fights are great opportunities for you to hold discussions with your children on better
ways of dealing with each other. Each of your children can contribute alternative solutions to the
problem. Good ideas and behaviour are praised. Avoid punishment whenever possible. In this
way, your son will also learn how to deal with the other children in his school.
Emotional support is necessary because he needs to feel that you are on his side and that
you are not rejecting him. If he has difficulty concentrating on doing his homework, offer to help
him. Speak positively to him when you are trying to assist him. Be patient and wait for a gradual
change for behaviour.
You must set realistic goals for your son. He needs to know that he will be able to achieve
whatever you have set for him. Involve him in your housework. Children should feel that they are
contributing the the family’s welfare. This is a great morale booster.
Finally, you must learn to lesten to your son carefully. His opinions should be respected,
encouraged and expanded. Give him a choice of two solutions instead of one. Children feel
better when they are given choices. They learn to make better decisions when they are allowed to
be themselves instead of what their parents expect of them.
