General Types of Literature
Poetry – is a rhythmic, imaginative language
expressing the invention, thought, imagination, taste,
passion and insight of the human soul.

Elements:
1. Verse – this is the poetic line. In the past, verses
would be particular about meter and rhyme.
Nowadays, however, free verse which means non-
conformity to the element mentioned is most
common.

2. Rhyme- it refers to similar sounds within the line or
among lines in poetry.

assonance ( And snowy summits old in story)
alliteration ( The sun nor star shall weaken
Nor any change of light;
Nor sound of water shaken

3. Meter – this measures the quantity of syllables in a
verse

4. Rhythm- this refers to the regular recurrence of
stressed and unstressed syllables
5. Imagery- figurative description in speech or writing.
