• The word “Bank” is of a European origin and is derived from the


Italian word “BANCO”, which means a table or a counter.
• In the opinion of the eminent scholars of banking, the reason why
this word was given to the banking business was the prevailing
traditions of Lombardian money changers.

Introduction to HBL.

• It is the prime Bank in country established in 1941 having a registered


head office in Karachi.
• It was nationalized in 1974,
• 26th February 2004 it has been privatized by Government of Pakistan
• It was take over by Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development
(AKFED). They acquired 51 percent of shares of HBL.
• It is one of the largest Banks of Pakistan with 1439 branches and
having total assets of Rs. 434,931,930,000.

Role of HBL in Pakistan.
• HBL was the first commercial bank to be established in Pakistan in 1947.
• over the years HBL has grown its branch network and became the largest private
sector .
• With a presence in 40 countries , subsidiaries in Hong Kong and UK affiliates in
Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan and representative offices in Iran and
China .HBL is also the largest domestic multinational.
• The bank is expanding its presence in principal international markets including
UK, UAE, South and Central Asia ,Africa and the Far East.
• Key areas of operations encompass product offerings and services in retail
banking .HBL has the largest corporate banking portfolio in Pakistan with an
active investment banking arm.
• SME and agriculture lending programs and banking services are offered in rural
and urban areas .In UK n GCC , HBL focuses on trade finance and remittances in
south Asian Diaspora in addition to basic banking facilities .
• HBL has always been a bank and a brand for the masses, with a history that is

on our initial investments.

systems in accordance with the fast changing business world, then its
future will be very bright.

In the end, the type of banking you prefer is really just that, personal
preference. Some people just want to continue to interact with the tellers
they know at their neighborhood bank. Or, they like the security of
actually seeing where their checks are deposited or the feeling of cash in
their hands.
If, on the other hand, time is a precious commodity, you're a multi-
tasked or you just like the convenience and control of doing your
banking over the Internet, then online banking is right for you.
