Use a dry-brush technique and follow the traced lines to paint the bats and cats black a nd to point tne ghosts white. Choose a ceramic basin sink in nearly any color, size, or shape; adjust the portern designs, page 197, to fil. Ahhough a biscuit-color basin provides a neutral background for the paint colors shown, white or dark

Trace a nd cut out the pallerns, opposite, from tracing paper. Tape patterns to the basin fa determine design placement based on basin size and shope. Remove the poftem pieces. To transfer the designs to the surface, use a soft lead pencil to darken the paper on the bac k side of the deSigns. Tope the patterns, design facing upward, in the basi n Use a penci I to trace over the design lines, transferring the designs to the basin [see Photo A, right). Check the desiqns to determine whether all lines have transferred; remove the patterns from the basin.

Generously apply surface conditioner with a clean, dry po intbrush to

the outlined areas, [see Photo B). Let the conditioner dry. Point desiqns within four hours of applying the conditioner, or reapply the conditioner before painting.

Begin pointing the dragonflies, referring to the photo, page 195. Paint the wings and body whife [see Photo C). While the point is wet, blend in blue and purple shadows [see Photo D). Point leaves and flowers in the some manner. Point a vine using two or three shades of green. Point small round purple and pink flowers by dipping a round paintbrush into both colors and applying the brush with a dotting motion onto the basin. let the point dry.

Apply narrow block shading lines and design details to the flowers and insects (see Photo E). let the paint dry

Apply one or more coots of glaze to the painted areas, ollowinq drying time for each coat Allow the paint to air-dry for at least 10 days before using the basin.

what to do

Wipe the brick clean; make sure it IS dry. In a well·ventilated work oreo, cover the work surface with newspapers. Spray the brick with white primer. Let the primer .dry.

To make the design, above, point the top of the brick white. Lei dry. Paint the sides red. Let dry.

Trace a poltern, pages 200-201, io tracing poper. Shade the bock of he tracing with a soft lead pencil. Design side up, tope the tracing to the brick. Trace the lines with a sharp pencil to transfer the design to the brick [see Photo A, righ~. If the surface is

too rough to transfer the ines, cut out and trace

the potterns.

Using the painting gUide on page 200, point in all the designs. Use the fine liner brush to point green vines. Paint purple

stripes on the red sides of the brick. Let the point dry.

Use a black paint pen to outline the deSigns [see Photo B). Draw a zigzag edge along the yellow border.

On the large flower, dot black on the tips of the flower petals by dipping the end of a large paintbrush handle in paint and applying it to the petal. Let the point dry. Use a smaller paintbrush handle
