PREFACE

This laboratory manual in Computer Hardware Fundamentals has been written to


guide students in their laboratory activities on Personal Computer (PC) systems
fundamentals, maintenance, and troubleshooting. This manual has been made considering
the latest PC technology in the market and the common practices in the trade of PCs.

ORGANIZATION
The manual has been organized with modules of activities that would be essential
in building a new PC system. Activities in testing and troubleshooting of PC’s major
components have also been included.

MATERIALS
The selection of materials used in this manual is made through the availability of
PC’s hardware, software, tools, and equipment in the University of San Agustin
Electronics Laboratory. During assembling and disassembling activities students will use
the 80386, the 804086, or the Pentium systems. Newer systems such as Pentium III or
Pentium IV computers will be used in the remaining activities. Two types of PC system
will be shown and will be used on the listed activities: the Advance Technology (AT) and
the Advance Technology Extended (ATX).
